I had my Samsung DLP HL-S6767 for three years and last month a black shadow appears on the screen located along the right side. I did not have an extended warranty. Is there a solution that I can avail myself regarding this problem?

Paul, these lamps are great technology, but as you know, so many things can go wrong with a television, or any electronic device for that matter. Discount-Merchant does warranty lamps over eBay for 1 year. The reason other retailers seem to warranty Osram for a year is because they are really cheap and the markups are really high. Discount-Merchant.com doesn't have outrageous markups. The warranty from DM is both fair and better than most vendors. I think you'll agree that 6 months is quite a long time, and if a lamp doesn't last you 6 months, you need a new television. These Philips lamps are great, and with average use, they'll last for years! Osrams aren't bad, but they aren't Philips. I think people are generally biased or prejudice to think that because a product is made in China, it's inferior. NEWS FLASH, almost all of our electronic components are made in China. Most plastic pieces in your car are made in China. I'm typing on a Microsoft keyboard that's made in China. I just hate when people say don't buy Chinese knock-offs since the real components ARE FROM CHINA!!!

OK-
SO you CLAIM the OSRAM lamp for my Sony XL5100 is of lessor quality than the Phillips units-
If so WHY won't the Discount-Merchant folks( or SONY)put their money ( and warranty) where your mouth is.

I can purchase the OSRAM replacement from multiple vendors
with a ONE YEAR warranty- NOT the 90 day wonder the DM folks (and SONY for that matter) warrant the Phillips units for.

In the 2 years I've owned my SXRD(model KDS-R60XBR1) I've had to have the Optical block replaced and am on the THIRD lamp.
The last one ( XL5100 with housing from SONY) lasted 140 days before it crapped out. The first one ran less than 2100 hrs.
In that regard I will NEVER purchase a SONY product again- they seem to have "lost the ball" in both product quality and customer service.

SO again if the Phillips unit is so freaking good why won't ANYONE BACK IT UP with a superior warranty?

I suspect SONY didn't chose the best bulb but the cheapest one. I've spent WAY too many years in the engineering business not to know that the purchasing pukes selected the lamp vendor NOT the engineering dept.

Thanks for the info on this site but I had to comment on the unabashed
hype regarding alternative lamp vendors.

Best regards,

Dennis, that sounds like a light tunnel. The walls of the light tunnel are lined with mirrors glued onto the side. One of the mirrors is probably falling off the sides, thus the section of darkness that seems to be moving. It has nothing to do with the lamp. That may have to be checked out by a repair shop. Unfortunately the light tunnels aren't an easy fix.

Did you reset the lamp counter? Did you close the back cover? Those are common problems with Samsung DLPs. Are you replacing the color wheel for a Sammy or an RCA or a Mitsubishi?

I have an HLS 6187 Samsung DLP which I purchased from Best Buy back in Aug 2006. Warranty expired, and of course did not extend.

Back in Nov 07 I experienced the random shutdowns tat several others have reported. I was disappointed because the tv was just over a year old. Anyway, Samsung did the right thing and covered it by e\replacing the bulb for me. It still baffles me that it went bad in such a short period of time.

Just last Friday before I went out of town the picture, which is norally phenomenla, especially with the new BluRay player, hust suddenly developed kind of a "half screen split of darkness levels. A straightline split of dark on one half and brighter on the other. The split has actually moved to the left several inches and then back. I ave vacuumed the back, reseated the bulb, check all connections, even disconnecting everything, and turning it on to the menu and the dark shaded side is still there.

The part you are referring to is the light tunnel. It's not an easy fix, and $600 is about fair for the cost of the part and labor. The mirrors are glued internally and if its out of alignment again and again you may need go back to the independent service center. If they're a good and reputable center, they'll do the repair for free!
