Step-by-Step Instructions for replacing the Philips Mitsubishi 915B441001 lamp.

When the picture on your Mitsubishi HD-LP TV becomes dimmer it’s time to replace the lamp. When the lamp is no longer working the Lamp Indicator will  blink red. You’ll need to buy a Philips Mitsubishi 915B441001 replacement lamp.

If you have a Mitsubishi HD-DLP TV series WD-60638 / WD-60738 /WD-60C10 /WD-65638 /WD-65C10 /WD-73638 /WD-73738 /WD-73C10 /WD-82838 the Lamp Indicator will be found on the front panel left of the Power button. Control Panel for Mitsubishi WD-60638 / WD-60738 /WD-60C10 /WD-65638 /WD-65C10 /WD-73638 /WD-73738 /WD-73C10 /WD-82838

When the TV is operating normally, this indicator will not be lit. When has turned RED, the lamp has burnt out and since this is the only source of light for the TV, it will not turn on.

Before Installation

The life of the lamp can vary depending on regular maintenance and how much the TV is used. Be sure to purchase a genuine Philips Mitsubishi 915B441001 Lamp Cartridge (this includes the housing as well as the bulb) either directly from the manufacturer or from an authorized dealer. Cheaper models may damage your set since these are often created with counterfeit, inferior parts that will not fit or perform properly. Your warranty may also be void if you install a lamp bought from an unauthorized source.

The Philips Mitsubishi 915B441001 is the recommend model for WD-60638 / WD-60738 /WD-60C10 /WD-65638 /WD-65C10 /WD-73638 /WD-73738 /WD-73C10 /WD-82838 HD-DLP televisions.

For an environmentally friendly and more economical option, you can also just purchase the bare lamp that allows you to re-use the existing housing by swapping the old bulb for the new one.

CAUTION:  Burn Danger! Allow the T.V. to cool for one hour before replacing the lamp. Avoid touching the lamp or lamp cartridge. Use the lamp handles only to remove the lamp.

HELPFUL TIP: Use a pair of rubber gloves during installation. These lamps contain mercury, which may end up on your skin. Don’t touch the lamp glass with bare hands as the oil form your fingers may cause premature lamp failure.

Our Mitsubishi WD-60C10 was working fine until one morning we turned it on and there was a pop sound and no picture. The bulb was indeed broken with glass shards on the inside of the lamp. We bought and installed the correct bulb as mentioned above. The tv turns on and the picture is fine for about 10 minutes then the picture begins to flicker and turns to a green tinge. The other colors don’t show. Just the picture in a “green scale” and black or white for the words. Please help.

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Darlene,
When the lamp popped it may have damaged the Green LCD chip or the color wheel. The color wheel, light engine or ballast may need to be replaced as well. I would recommend joining out DLP forum: http://www.fixyourdlp.com/forum. There is a while community of experts waiting to help and they can help pinpoint the problem and offer solutions. flashing orange light what’s wrong?

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Jim,
An amber/orange light flashing can mean the following:
      1. TV is too hot. The TV will shut off if it overheats.
      • Ambient room temperature may be too high. Turn off the TV and let the room temperature drop.
      • Clear blocked air vents. Ensure at least a four-inch clearance on all sides of the TV
      2. Lamp access door is not secure or no lamp installed.
TV will not operate until lamp access door is secured.
If you have the red and amber light together:
      TV may require service.
•Hold power button on front panel for 10 seconds to reset TV.
If LED continues to flash red and amber after reset, turn off the TV and unplug it from the AC power source. Wait one minute and then plug the set back in.
If LED continues to flash red and amber, go to http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com or call 1-800-332-2119 to

Hello, about a week ago i noticed that the picture on my Mitsubishi wd-73738 was dimming so I ordered a replacement lamp from Mitsubishi, when it came I had a heck of a time replaceing it, no matter how much i try to wiggle to get it to seat i cant get the lamp housing in far enough to get the 2 mounting screws to make contact. i did the best i could with pitting minimal duct tape a 2 edges to keep it from moving and closed the door. but it is still dim. any suggestions?

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Thomas,
Where did your purchase your lamp? There are some counterfeit products on the market that were not fitting into TV due to size issues. It sounds like you have have accidentally bought one of those, which is why it won’t fit properly. Check with your seller. There is a strong possibility it’s counterfeit. The picture is going to remain dim because the lamp needs to have an exact fit in order to work properly. We recommend buying direct from an OEM manufacturer such as Discount Merchant. So, check your lamp and get back to us. We can help you from there.
      Cheers,
      Shelagh

      • avatar Kevin says:

Hi Shelagh, I just ordered 2 bulbs from Shopjimmy.com and am having the same problem. It seems the male to female sockets will not line up properly to plug in. You can feel them grind as you attempt to push them together. I tried everything even calling them. They also were baffled. The part or housing # is Part Number: 915B441001 Board Number(s): PHI/334, (SKU: sj-Lamp-915B441001-P). Could I have a counterfeit? Tried them both and don’t know what else to order. Thanks

        • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

          Hi Kevin,
Yup, you have counterfeits. This is a common problem with counterfeits. Will Shopjimmy give you a refund? I would return both and get your money back. Discount Merchant manufactures their own lamps approved by Philips — the main supplier of all these Mitsubishi products. I would call their live customer service department and they can help you find that authentic part. You’ll be guaranteed a lamp that fits and works. Toll free number is (800) 281-8860. Let me know if you have any problems.

    Why projector bulb blows WD-73640.

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Steve,
If your recently installed blub has just blown up then you bought a counterfeit lamp. Unfortunately these lamps usually only last a few hours and are prone to explosions. If you were using an OEM authentic lamp then it was either used past its suggest lamp life — ignoring the lamp replacement warnings and continuing to use the lamp that has reached end of life can make it explode. If it was a newly installed lamp bought from a registered OEM dealer then contact them and ask for a replacement lamp. We have a blog about how to clean up your projector when the lamp has exploded. http://www.fixyourdlp.com/2012/07/16/what-to-do-when-your-projector-lamp-explodes/ Hope this helps.

    I have a wd-65638 model number
It will not show a picture it does have sound and the indicator light is green. What can be done to trouble shoot this TV?

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Curtis,
The projector lamp would keep the TV shut down permmanently. The fact you have sound but no picture indicated it’s the color wheel ballast. I would recommend joining our forum http://www.fixyourdlp.com/forum/ where there are more experienced experts who can help you pinpoint the exact problem. Please keep me posted on how things are going.

  9. avatar Anna says:

After replacing bulb I’m only getting a red indicator light that’s not flashing

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Anna,
The red indicator means the lamp is not working. Have you installed an authentic OEM lamp? Some of the generic or counterfeit lamps do not fit properly so the TV won’t turn on even after the installation. Also check that the projector lamp door has been re-installed properly since this can also keep the projector from turning on. This video shows you how to install the lamp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ONPuB5L-x4. Did your replacement go like this? For everyone else who bought 1 or 2 $25 projector bulbs and you still have no video, like me, take note.

Instead of replacing driver and system boards after buying two cheap lamps with no change, I spent $100 from Mitsu electric for the same bulb and 3rd lamp works fine. Something about the correct wattage and genuine parts that makes the difference.

        • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

Hi. My mitsubishi model number is WD-60638. We just replaced the lamp because it burned out. After we installed it, it began to turn itself off after a few minutes. A yellow light turns on and it turns off completely. What can I do?

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Nancy,
Did you reset the lamp timer? You would do this using the remote control and bringing up the menu option to find either advanced or sometimes just options. There will be a lamp hour section that you need to reset to zero. On many projectors, until the lamp hours are reset, the projector will think it’s still using an old lamp and keep shutting down. Try that and if it doesn’t work, you may have installed a counterfeit lamp that isn’t working or the color wheel got damaged while you were changing the lamp. More than likely it’s the lamp timer or the actual lamp. Please let me know how things turn out.

Hi my Mitsubishi TV I’m assuming turned itself off last night like normal but when I go to turn it on this morning, no power whatsoever. I’ve unplugged and replugged in different outlets. I tried holding the power button and still have nothing. What’s going on???

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Josh,
Could be a couple of things: the lamp is burnt out and this automatically switches off the TV. If the filter were clogged the TV may have overheated and the lamp may have exploded, also triggering a shut down. Your DMD chip could have blown or one of your colour wheels. Usually the TV not turning on is directly affected by the lamp not working. Hi I have a mitsubishi dlp 73738. I just replaced the bulb and it works fine for a few minutes then the colors go haywire for about 5 minutes then the tv just shuts off. How do I fix this?

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Jesse,
The first thing to check is that you have reset the lamp timer to zero. Next thing to check is that the lamp was not counterfeit and was bought from a Philip registered OEM manufacturer such as discount-merchant.com. Sometimes the counterfeit lamps aren’t calibrated properly so the projector can’t read it properly so the picture is affected. The final thing to check is that the color wheel wasn’t damaged when the lamp was replaced. Hope this helps. Hi Shelagh!
I have a Mitsubishi WD-82838. I recently had the no screen/red light issue that means “bad lamp”, so I replaced it with a new Philips model (not a counterfeit). The TV now works, except that the screen frequently flickers from bright to dim (mostly near the top of the image). Rarely, there will be a color shift, but the flicker is the most common issue. Someone suggested I try another lamp. Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Ken,
Maybe a ballast problem. But let me put this to my forum experts and see what they suggest. Will get back to ASAP. You can also join our forum.

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Ken,
I have more information from another expert who says it’s probably a ballast wheel.
From what you describe it actually sounds like there could be a color wheel issue involved . The symptoms point to that although I would also recommend to have him place his hands on top of the TV and see if he feels any vibration. If so that pretty much confirms the color wheel starting to act up. Thanks.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi
I bought a Mitsubishi Model 60C10 series 100243 and after 6 years the screen is black and the sound is gone. Can you tell me what I need to get it running. I gave it to my senior parents and they love it , they cant afford another and at this stage of the game neither can I. Thank you in advance.

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Sheilah,
Have your changed the lamp and installed an OEM authorized replacement lamp? If it’s reached end of life that will give you a black screen. No sound indicates that it may be the power supply board where there area a group of 16v/1000uf caps that burn out or fall. You should call a TV repair person as replacing these needs a trained technician. Please let us know how everything turns out.

Hello, I have a Mitsubishi WD-73C10. Today it made a loud pop noise then shut off with red indicator light on the front panel. After several minutes I turned the tv back on. At that point it had sound but no picture then shut off after about a minute with the same red indicator light. I’ve read the questions and answers here but can not determine from this thread if the problem is the lamp or the lamp and color wheel ballist. Please advise.

  18. avatar Sean Russell says:

    Hi there,
I have a WD65638 tv. The red light is on, no picture but no sound. I’m sure the lamp is gone but could there be an issue with the sound? I have had a buzzing or hum sound for quite a while.

    Thanks
    Sean

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Sean,
If your lamp is gone that will affect the whole system. More than likely that buzzing/hum you have been hearing has been the lamp ballast hitting the lamp. Try replacing the lamp and see if these problems go away. It sounds like a classic scenario of needing a replacement lamp. Good luck and let us know how things are progressing.
      Regards,
      Shelagh

    • avatar Jane doe says:

A buzzing is indicative of capacitors or transistors going out on the lamp ballast or the power supply to the TV itself. You should get refurbished parts or a repair kit for it. IF you are handy with a soldering iron, the lamp ballast is easy to fix but you also need to by a capacitor checker and voltmeter to make absolutely sure you have bad parts and you have fixed them afterwards. You can buy individual capacitor or transistor parts that replace everything damaged from a website like mouser. Looks up Tamaptec on Youtube and you will get a nice flow chart for fixing DLP TVs there. I had a Lamp Ballast that was bad and aa new lamp that was getting a bit too hot for the DLP chip. I added ArticSilver#5 Thermal compound to the heat sink after removing the crappy thermal grease, I cleaned everything including the fans, checked all caps and the voltages on the boards and all checks out fine. When I first replaced the lamp it was fine for a full 36 hours but then kept turning off. It turned out that the new lamp was not legit and replacing that after everything else fixed it. It is all good now. If you get overheating, make sure to try adding a fan behind the TV first before you give up. These TVs need air flow. It makes the lamps last longer too.

  19. avatar Kim says:

I have a WD-60638 and it will not power on. I have been hearing a humming noise for a while and now I have no power. I have tried to rest it and still I will not get a light.

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Kim,
The first thing to check is the TV lamp. How long has it been in use? That humming sound is often the lamp reaching end of life. It that happens, then the timing sensor in the TV will prevent it from turning on to protect the optics inside from being damaged. I recommend contacting discount-merchant.com and asking them about getting a replacement lamp for your unit. The other problem could be a ballast or colour wheel. But the quickest and least expensive way to try and fix this is by installing a new OEM TV lamp. Hope this helped.

Hello I have a problem with my mitsubishi model 73738 the error code says I needed to replace my lamp And so I replaced it tried to turn it on but no picture goes solid green and starts to blink red again in the same sequence of 6,6 I don’t think it’s the lamp i believe I need to reset the lamp timer but I don’t know how please help

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Demetrius,
It’s definitely the TV thinking the lamp still needs to be replaced. Do you have the original remote to use the menu buttons to reset the lamp timer? Solid green screen could also mean a ballast colour wheel problem. Can I suggest that you check out our forum for threads discussing this problem. There are more experts over there. • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Ryan,
It sounds like you got a counterfeit lamp installed that hasnt been properly calibrated and is burning too low to give off the light that is needed. Did the lamp come with OEM stamps and a serial number you can check?

HI. Our Mitsubishi tv has a solid red light the sound still works. I took the lamp out to check for the item number to order a new lamp but I noticed the bulb was NOT blown.. does this mean anything or does the lamp still need to be replaced? Help please!

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      HI Brandee,
Your lamp doesn’t have to be blown to reach end of life. In fact it’s better if the bulb is still intact. The solid red light does mean that the lamp has reached end of life and needs to be replaced. Don’t keep using it because the lamp will then overheat and blow out. How long have you had the lamp? If it’s longer than six months and you use your TV a lot, then the lamp has reached end of life. I recommend checking out discount-merchant.com for a well priced AUTHENTIC replacement. Spend the extra few dollars and avoid buying counterfeit since they will cause you even more problems down the road.

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Holdfast,
Sometimes the lamps sold on e-bay are counterfeit lamps that haven’t been calibrated properly and the projector will read this as a lamp that is burnt out. The other issues is that the ballast/colour wheel can be damaged gone and the projector won’t work. Is it worth you time to get a technician to look at it? I would call discount-merchant.com and ask about their lamps http://www.discount-merchant.com/ 1-800-281-8860. They may be able to help out with the ballast problem. I would also recommend joining our forum where there are experts who can show you how to test your colour wheel and ballast. http://www.fixyourdlp.com/forum.

You are SOOOOOOO correct, you must purchase genuine lamps from Mitsu Electric. After 2 cheap ebay lamps that 3rd one did the trick. And it sounds like a lot of other folks went down the same rabbit hole I did.

        • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

          Hi Tim,
It’s hard to resist the lure of a bargain but counterfeit lamps don’t save you any money in the long run. We try to encourage people to spend the extra money upfront because it pays off in the long run. Thanks for sharing.

I have a Mitsubishi md-6038 – it has sound and seems to be working fine but no picture, from what i am reading it doesnt seem to be the lamp, is this correct?

    • avatar Shelagh McNally says:

      Hi Rick,
It may be lamp about to blow since it will give you sound but no picture. The lamp is the easiest solution because the other things that may be wrong could be the ballast, color wheel or main circuit board. How old is the lamp and how many hours has it been in use? I would start with the lamp. You could also considered joining our forum where there are many more experts you could help you out.
