The JVC HD-61FN97 is a 61” rear projection high definition TV set using D-ILA technology. The set can provide a resolution of 1920 X 1080 at an aspect ratio of 16:9. As such these devices are capable of producing around 3000 lines of resolution and images which have resolutions on the higher sides of 2000 X 1340 pixels.

The use of D-ILA technology also enables the set to offer contrast ratios of around 10000:1 using the various feature built in the set. It also offers brightness levels upto 12000 lumens which really is a high number. As the set is really very bright the viewer is not required to dim the lights in the room as is the case in most other TV’s like the front projection sets. The set is ideal as a high end home theatre system. The higher resolution makes it a good option even for critical viewing venues such as museums, studios, screening rooms etc.

The D-ILA technology uses a three chip design which gives a different chip for red, green and blue colors. This three chip design is mounted on a small 0.9” CMOS chip. The set offers smooth images from any sources as the input image is accurately reproduced. The remote of the TV set is very well designed and simple to use but lacks backlighting. The cost of the set might be slightly higher than the sets of the same size using different technology but the quality of the JVC HD-61FN97 more than makes up for it.

The Zenith L23W36 is a 23” flat panel HDTV using LCD technology. The widescreen is enclosed in an elegantly designed silver/gray colored cabinet. The TV set is just 3” deep and weighs only 30 pounds which makes the installation very much easier. The set offers a native resolution of 1280 X 768 at an aspect ratio of 16:9. A stand is also provided with the set.

The set gives truly sharp and distortion free images. The set offers a contrast ratio of 400:1 which is relatively good. The brightness levels of the set too are good and have been measured at 450 cd/sq. m. A three line digital comb filter is used to improve the resolution by removing blurred edges in the images and remove dots or any other visual interference.

The set offers extremely wide viewing angles of 176 degrees both horizontally and vertically which is very much comparable to that of the cathode ray tube TV’s. This enables the viewer to get a clear picture from any angle in front of the TV which was not possible with earlier LCD’s. This innovative TV set lets you switch from a TV channel to PC viewing by pressing a single button. The picture in picture mode of the TV set lets you watch two channels at the same time. The Samsung HLN5065W has a 50” screen and delivers amazing picture using the DLP technology. Picture inputs from the HD, DVD or the PC are excellent in quality. The SD signals though do not look all that great and it tends to show every flaw in the video or the picture which is given as an input. The native resolution of the set is 1280 X 720.

With the use of DLP technology you do not have to worry about screen a door or burn-in effect which is not the case in other technologies. The set uses a self replaceable lamp which is reported to have a life of about 10000 hours which should last you for about a couple of years depending upon the daily usage. The TV as such is never going to wear out. DLP TV’s even have better black levels than the LCD or plasma TV’s. Samsungs DNIE technology ensures richer, deeper colors and sharper, brighter images. Samsung also has equipped the TV with many other features which help to make a better viewing experience.

Even though the black levels are better than LCD and plasma, they are still way below the standard CRT’s. The optical noise given out by the set is another drawback. The Samsung HLN5065W is priced at $3500 and does provide good value for money. Taking the extended warranty is really not a bad option with this set.

The Samsung HLP4663 is a 46” (diagonally measured) rear projection high definition TV using DLP technology. The wide screen TV gives a native resolution of 1280 X 720p at an aspect ratio of 16:9. The cabinet of the set has been fantastically designed to make it look elegant. The screen is surrounded by a thin bezel cabinet which is ultra light. The set weigh in at just 70 pounds which is very light in comparison. This helps installing the set an easy job. The depth of the set is a fraction more than 13” (13.3” to be precise) which almost makes it look like a flat screen TV.

Samsung has installed plenty of features in the set which give the user a better experience. Samsungs DNIE technology helps deliver richer and crisper images. The Digital Micro Mirror Device (DMD) generates very high definition video images. The set is utilized with a cable card slot which makes it cable ready so that viewer can watch cable TV without having to spend additional money on other set top boxes. The Samsung HLP4663 has a feature called the digital comb filter which can be used to eliminate any optical disturbances in the form of dot, lines etc.

Two built in speakers have been placed into the cabinet which offer a total sound output of 30 Watts. The set also supports three languages such as English, French and Spanish.

The JVC HD-P61R1U is a 61” widescreen TV using JVC’s D-ILA technology. The set offers a full native resolution of 1920 X 1080. The D65 accurate color balance calibration makes the set ideal for home theatre, various studios and screening rooms. The slim and compact design makes it require less space and also makes installation easier. The JVC D-ILA technology uses 3 D-ILA chips which gives unmatched color reproduction to give a film like performance.

The high resolution given by the JVC HD-P61R1U is the highest available resolution today. This makes a fantastic option not only as a high end TV set but also for critical viewing venues. The pixels are extremely close to each other and even from a few feet away from the screen the pixels are not visible. This helps the set to produce high quality images which have very high brightness and contrast. The D-ILA technology also gives longer device life and optimal performance. The D65 color temperature standard enables the set to produce rich and deep colors which look tremendously natural.

The optical noise is very less in the JVC HD-P61R1U. The dots and other interferences if any can be further removed using the Digital Comb Filter feature. For excellent sound output Stereo Speakers have been built into the cabinet to provide a total power output of 20 Watts. The RCA HDLP61W151 is a 61” (diagonal) TV using DLP technology. The native resolution of the set is 1280 X 720 at 1080i. Strangely the set does not support external signals at 720p. The cabinet of the set has been exquisitely designed and is perhaps the best of the lot. The silver base with the black panel is a fantastic combination. The panel is extremely thin which makes the set look smaller. The buttons are fitted with small blue lights which can be turned on or off as you prefer. The remote too has been given a touch of class. It has been shrunk to make it fit comfortably into your hands and has been fitted with backlights on all the important buttons.

The set is basically extremely bright. It does seem to be an excellent choice for those who do a lot of viewing in the afternoon or with a lot of lights on. This TV is certainly not a good choice for watching movies in the dark. The high brightness however did not lead to the set having decent black levels. The color saturation or let me state it as undersaturation does not seem to be the factor leading to high light output. Some viewers did prefer the undersaturation to the oversaturated look of the other TV’s. Although the RCA HDLP61W151 does attract comments such as it is too washed out.

The RCA HDLP61W151is priced at somewhere around $4000 which is really not all that bad.

With a screen size of 61” measured diagonally the RCA HD61LPW165 is a huge TV set having an average display quality. Despite the screen size the set has a depth of just 19.8” which is quite commendable. The set uses DLP technology which gives the viewer superior image quality without the presence of defects such as screen door effect, image burn-in etc. which are found in other technologies.

The set offers a native resolution of 1280 X 786 with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The set has wide viewing angles of 80 degrees horizontal and 20 degrees vertical. The RCA HD61LPW165 is a very bright TV set which does seem to be a slight drawback which RCA do not seem to have been able to conquer. The light output levels are incredible high which makes the set ideal for afternoon viewing as the light entering the room tends to reduce the brightness. This set is also good for viewing with a lot of ambient lighting in the room. This TV is certainly not the best option if you like to watch with the lights off.

The black levels too are not too good inspite of the high brightness. The colors are too undersaturated and almost gives a washed off look to the screen. Although that is best left upto the user as some do prefer the undersaturated look to the oversaturated look of most other TV sets.

This RPTV from RCA looks to have found its mark with some brilliant performance making it an excellent choice. The RCA HD50LPW165 uses DLP technology and has a screen size of 61” (diagonal) with a depth of just 16” which makes it extremely thin. This allows it to be fitted even in small areas unlike some of the really big sets.

The native resolution offered by the set is 1280 X 786 with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The set also pack in internal front speakers which deliver a total power output of 40 watts along with a surround sound effect. The set is also cable ready with a Cable Card slot and an integrated high definition tuner. This makes it easier to attach the cable connection and eliminates the hassles and the costs of going for additional set top boxes. The RCA HD50LPW165 also provides considerably wide viewing angles of 80 degrees horizontal and 20 degrees vertical.

The RCA HD50LPW165 produces images with precision and high color depth. The contrast ratios produced by the set are simply astounding. The brightness, the gradation and the detail level too is spectacular. As the set uses DLP technology the problems like image burn in or the screen door effect can be avoided. The set also allows the user to view multiple channels at the same time using the picture in picture mode.

Onscreen displays are available in three languages which are English, French and Spanish. The menu system of the set is fairly easy to use.

The native resolution of the screen is 1280 X 720 at an aspect ratio of 16:9. The aluminum cabinet of the set has been exquisitely designed unlike most of the box shaped TV sets of other manufacturers. The set has a silver base with an extremely thin black frame which makes it seem to be almost borderless.

The depth of the set is just less than 16” (15.96” to be insanely accurate) which takes it into the category of one of the flattest DLP HDTV sets. Of course the mark is only going to get bettered with time. The RCA HDLP50W151 displays real quality when it comes to the light output. It delivers extremely high brightness without the blooming effect occurring in the white parts of the picture. This makes the set ideal for people who watch a lot of TV during the day or in especially bright settings.

With the high brightness it was expected that the RCA HDLP50W151 would have at least average black levels. But the black levels were really disappointing which made the gray scale detail suffer. Even when properly calibrated the poor black level also affected the contrast ratios. The problem of the set really lies with the colors as they are not just saturated enough. Of course some people do prefer under saturated sets to the over saturated ones of most of the competitors. To purchase a replacement lamp for this TV, click here

The JVC HD-70FH96 is 70 inch (diagonal) HDTV launched by JVC using D-ILA technology. The set provides a native resolution of 1920 X 1080 with an aspect ratio of 16:9. The depth of the set is barely 20 ½” which makes it handy in case you have space limitations. D-ILA uses a three chip LCOS technology which helps to produce a flicker and burn free picture. This technology stabilizes device performance and increases chip productivity. It avoids the rainbow effect of the DLP sets. The cabinet of the set is even thinner and the speaker area at the bottom has been made slimmer.

The picture is extremely smooth on the JVC HD-70FH96. The colors are very rich and crisp. The contrast ratio of the set is simply amazing. The black levels though are a little disappointing. The performance of the set is further improved by the use of Digital Super Detail edge enhancement which gives crisper and more distinct edges. The 3:2 pull down menu can be used for viewing content originally shot for film. The set comes equipped with Cable Card slot which makes it unnecessary to buy and attach any other set top boxes. Digital noise clear circuitry is used to clear any visual disturbances appearing on the screen.

Compared to the LCD technology the pixels are even closes to each other. The distance between the pixels cannot be noticed unless you are really close to the screen. This avoids the pixilation effect and provides a smooth and clear image.
