The JVC HD-70G886 is a 70” HDTV using JVC’s D-ILA technology. The cabinet of the set is extremely thin and the set is just a little on the higher side of 20”. The cabinet, whatever there is, has been very well designed to make it curvy and attractive. The screen area is almost double that of a 50” display and almost triple that of a 42” display. The set is very bright which leads it to have a fairly high black level. The contrast ratio is also pretty good. When the rest of the image was really bright, the black seemed really high. This problem was not seen during darker scenes which looked fairly dark. 

 

The detail level is quite good. The detail control function can be used to reduce the spots and any other visible differences (if there are any). The smoothness of the images is quite significant. The colors of the JVC HD-70G886 are very realistic and rich. While the image quality of the set is good it is really loud. The fan of the TV can be heard during any silent part of the movie.

 

The remote is quite good and has most of the functions. Blue backlight is also another important utility provided. There is a glow in the dark button which can be used to turn the backlight on and off. The big drawback of the backlight is that it produces a whining sound whenever it is on.

 

The processing performance of the JVC HD-70G886 is a little disappointing it is not a deciding factor. The screen is deceptively large and if you want a large screen TV the JVC HD-70G886 is a very good option.

The newly developed HD D-ILA devices help the JVC HD-P70R1U in giving the native resolution of 1920 x 1080. This is the highest available resolution today for home theatre applications. This makes the set appropriate for high-end home theater use but also for post-production screening rooms.

The design if the JVC HD-P70R1U is extremely slim and compact. The frame of the 70” set is very thin and it is just over 20” (20 ½” to be accurate) in depth. This makes the installation very easy and makes itself a few more points wherever space is a restriction. The visual engine of the set produces rich and natural colors. Noise reduction is also commendable. The picture runs very smoothly as the source media is accurately reproduced. A optical filter is also provided which maintains constant contrast in each color. There is virtually no space between the adjacent pixels in the display of the JVC HD-P70R1U thanks to JVC’s D-ILA technology. This helps in producing the picture having the highest brightness, contrast and resolution. The HD-P70R1U combines the uses a single high-power user-replaceable lamp. A unique inorganic alignment layer gives longer device life and maximum performance in all operating conditions.

The Hitachi 55VG825 is a 55” HDTV using LCD technology to give a crisp and smooth image. The set is from Hitachi’s Ultravision CineForm Line. The Sony KDS-R60XBR1 is 60” (diagonally), beautifully designed and is very attractive without being too loud which is quite normal for Sony so to speak.

The contrast ratio of the Sony KDS-R60XBR1 at 13330:1 is simply astonishing. It is almost three times better than the immediately trailing set. Most of the credit for this though goes to the auto iris component which is called as advanced iris by Sony. Even with this component turned off, the set came up with a maximum contrast ratio of 3100:1 and a minimum of 5000:1, which is quite impressive. The black levels too are remarkable at 0.006 foot-lamberts which does give a sufficient explanation about the great contrast ratio.

The color of the Sony KDS-R60XBR1 though is a little disappointing. The colors aren’t accurate. Red and green are oversaturated. This makes everything more pleasing to look at and more inviting. This is perhaps the best way to make mistakes look beautiful. The sharpness or smoothness of the images though is unmatched.

The remote is really very hefty. The layout is typically that of Sony. It is easy to use which is perhaps because of the fact that it lacks most of the functions you would want the remote to have. Backlight is another feature that is missing which makes the remote very hard to use in dim light. There are many adjustments which can be made but this only makes the menus more complex and also more time consuming to navigate. There is also no function to check the lamp life that is left.

The set is costing around $5000 is quite rightly priced for the quality which is being offered.

The Samsung HL-R4266W is a 42” HD ready set. It is very beautifully designed and very much worth the price. The set is just 13” deep and weighs somewhere around 62 pounds. The set is also cable ready. It allows a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The two stereo speakers are mounted on the set give excellent audio output.

 

The set offers amazingly bright picture, rich and deep colors. DLP technology used in the set also produces no screen aging, burn-in or color shifting. Samsung’s Cinema Smooth makes the images smooth and vivid. The Samsung HL-R4266W also offers picture in picture mode as well as five preset aspect ratio modes which are Normal, Wide, Panorama, Zoom1, Zoom2. The set is extremely good, setup is easy and the price is good for the quality which is being given. The cabinet is extremely modest which makes it look even better.

 

The contrast ratio of the set too is very good at 2500:1. The Samsung HL-R4266W though has its drawbacks. It displays all signals at 720p while most people now would not look for anything less than 1080p which does come at a higher price. Priced at somewhere around 1800$ the HL-R4266W is a very good buy as far as the price-quality ratio is concerned. The set also packs in most of the required features.

 

The biggest disappointment though is the users manual. It takes it for granted that the user has all the knowledge of the features in a HDTV and forgets to describe any of them. Although it is not such a bad thing to have only the manual as an underperformer.

The contrast and black levels are the best from a rear projection TV. Black levels go very low without sacrificing the details in dark and shadowy areas. Colors are deep and saturated which gives the images a rich feel. Colors are produced from three separate image chips for red, green and blue and hence continuous color is provided. The colors though sometimes were a little too abundant and even though they were not always perfect they were pleasing.The set is fully featured as any Sony product normally is. The usability is very easy although the menus sometimes get a little complicated. The remote can be used to control most of the functions. This 60” TV is from Hitachi’s Ultra Vision CineForm series and is very much the contender as an ideal centerpiece in you home theatre system. The display at 720p offers a resolution of 1280 X 720 which is considerably low as most other competitive models have upgraded to 1080p. The price also is a factor which may make you look the other way to find cheaper options. The 3-way speakers provided to give stereo sound effect make the cabinet very large.

The Hitachi 60VG825 though bags the honors on a few features like a USB port which enables viewing directly from the digital camera possible. Provision of the cable card makes the set cable ready. The 3-panel LCD design gives sharp edges, accurate colors and detailed picture. There is a 4 level black enhancement which gives incredible black levels. The speakers give a total stereo output of 40 watts with an option for surround sound. They can also be used as the center in a home theatre system. The day and night settings can be saved and are automatically turned on and off depending on the time of the day.

Although at 720p the resolution of the Hitachi 60VG825 cannot be compared with other 1080p sets of the same size, it is quite commendable.
