Re: Samsung DLP Signal Input Problem
Have you tried hooking the directtv box up to another TV in the house? that might further help solve your problem as it could be the box, the video board, or the cables at this point. Swap cables too where you can and try to eliminate as many possibilities as possible.

Sounds like you did the right thing. You can actually see if the ballast is bad by looking at the capacitors. Expose the plastic caps and you can see if those bad boys are going bad. They'll look bulgey. The other thing it can be with a slight possibility is the actually power supply itself. With ou...

Re: samsung won't get cable
So you're not using a cable box?
Do you have 2 cable boxes? Maybe it's the cable box. If it says weak signal, it tells me that it might be your cable provider or something to do with the box and not the TV.

It actually almost looks like the lamp isn't seated properly. Have you taken it out of them enclosure? You might need a newer designed enclosure. Check to see if anything is melted in the lamp housing. It doesn't really look like a light tunnel but I could be wrong. I'm going to keep asking around. ...

oh man, that does look like a DMD/light engine failure. You'll have to replace the light engine in this instance because replace a DMD board costs almost as much as a light engine. If you get a tech out there, they can probably do it for you for $100, but you've also got to pay for the $300-400 ligh...

It's not a multi-colored lamp. It's one lamp. The humming is coming from the color wheel.
This is how it works:
Power Supply > ballast > Lamp > color wheel > light engine > picture

I'm not really sure if I know what the cause is. The only things I can think of that cause this defect is a video board or light engine. If you have a photo of the picture you're getting (try to take one with the flash off), we can probably find someone who knows for sure what's wrong.

There are a few possibilities, but I'll go with the obvious first... The lamp. If you've had that lamp for a very long time, without replacing said lamp, than that may be your first option in troubleshooting, since you're going to need a new one anyway. TV lamps and bulbs of 2-3 years old should hav...

Sounds like a bad ballast or power supply. Definitely check to see which part smells burned. That will give you an indicator on what is going bad.

Sorry it took so long to approve this post. I can think of two things: Ballast or Power Supply. A loud crack? Can you elaborate on that? The best thing to do is replace the color wheel. If it's getting stuck, you can't shave, tighten or loosen anything to save the wheel. It may already be bad, or worn the thing out. This is, of course, there's something isn't physically stuck in the way of the color wheel. Replacing the entire wheel ...

Re: using a generic lamp in my dlp?
You've got to be careful for those warranty techs. This isn't a slight to techs out there, but some techs will grab whatever lamp that will work. A Sony TV should not use a 100w lamp. It needs 120w P22h typically. And if you check with Philips, those run 100/120w. You can check the date code on the ...

It's not glue. It's in all spent bulbs usually when they blow though. It could be a variety of things from the coating they use in the reflector, to the ceramic in the post, or from the manufacturing process itself. I don't know what it is either.

Most likely a color wheel problem. The wheel is probably not spinning correctly there for blurring flesh tones and making it appear blurry on picture. You'd really need to take a photo of it though or video to show us.

Sounds like a light tunnel. It's like a tubular tunnel that the light travels through with mirrors lined inside. Oh wow, the pins were bent?
If the screen isn't centered, it's usually something to do with moving it around. If it is centered and there are black bars, usually fuzzy bars, that means the light tunnel could have collapsed. You're having all sorts of problems with this thing!
