Need to know if I broke my roomie's TV :/

Postby sancho » Mon Aug 29, 2011 6:20 am

Hello all. Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

Had my PC hooked up to roomate's Samsung HDTV (model # HLT5676SX/XAA) via DVI>VGA. Used an inf editor to try to get it to 1152x648@60hz (for gaming), didn't work. Picked up a new video card the other day, plugged it in via HDMI. Worked fine until driver install, when the screen flickered off during install (like it does) heard a high-pitched sort of buzzing sound, fairly faint, twice in a row, and TV is now dead. Unresponsive, error code (lamp, then 3 blinking lights, which I've read could mean a few things).

What did I change in the driver you ask? Not much. Added 1152x648 (16:9) as a possible resolution at 60hz (driver defaulted to 75hz for that resolution, was just tryin' to be safe...?)

Two repair people have told me you can't damage this kind of TV via HDMI, even with bad instructions (should revert to "not supported mode") but I'm not so sure. Can anyone confirm whether this was a screw up, or just a coincidence? Gonna have it repaired either way, just want to know for future :)

Thanks again.
