Samsung HLP6163 Light Engine/ DMD

Postby ajespo » Mon Mar 31, 2014 9:51 pm

I have an HLP-6163WX/XAA with a few problems. The set has a new bulb, ballast and color wheel that all work fine, until it doesn't. The TV will start normally and run with a great picture and all normal. When it runs for 20 -40 minutes the picture will start to look scrambled and will correct sometimes but often it will not. When it happens the tv doesn't respond to the remote and none of the controls on the set work. I disconnect power, let it cool down, reconnect and the same scenario repeats. So I cleaned the whole back out of dust and verified both fans are running well. I then hooked up an additional fan, larger, behind the DLP chip heat sink and it worked for many months. BUT now the TV is randomly going black, the sound still works, the bulb is still lit and the controls still work.

Does any one think it is anything other than the DMD board? The DMD board for this set is BP96-00678B, not availible anywhere, but I find a substitute of BP96-00678F. Does any one have experience with this board as a substitute?

Also, Discount Merchants has light engines for HLP5063W sets for great prices, will these fit the 6163? The Samsung service manual shows only one light engine for the whole HLP range (4663,5063,5663,6163). I would replace the whole thing if it would fit. Any help would be great.

Hello,

that sounds like great trouble shooting, I think I can help out with two aspects. One would be the bulb you replaced, did you replace it with an OEM BP96-00826A Philips lamp?

I do not think what you describe to require the entire DMD board replacement, I think a brand new DMD Chip will fix your issue. The thing about finding the proper part number is that I would need a manufacture date and exact model number, this can be found on the back of the TV. I think by the mention on the topic that your model should look like HLP6163W and maybe "XAA" at the end.

Let me know and I can find a part number for the DMD Chip!

Grayfox, The bulb is the OEM Philips lamp from DM. The full model number is HLP6163wx/xaa. My label has no manufacture date. It was purchased in January of 2004. I have attached the label which shows model and serial number.

Now when you say DMD chip are you talking about the chip behind the big heatsink with the dedicated fan on the dmd board? I thought that was the DLP chip. Let me know if this is enough info. Thanks for the help and your response.

Hello,

Yes the DMD is the same as DLP Chip behind the heatsink it looks like the one on the link below. If I can assume the manufacture date was around January 2004, the part number would be 4719-001997.

http://www.discount-merchant.com/p-146847-mitsubishi-samsung-toshiba-4719-001997-dmd-dlp-chip.aspx

I would diagnose a little further but judging by what you detail, any technician you explain this to might arrive at the same conclusion..

I hope this helps a bit!

Thank you Grayfox. It is very helpful. Just out of curiousity, I'm constantly trying to learn about these sets, why do you go to the DMD chip and not the DMD board? Once again thank you.

Hello,

Well I assume the real reason I jumped to the Chip as opposed to the entire Board was from experience. The part of the DMD board to always malfunction is most often the DLP Chip, and since putting extra ventilation on it worked, it made sense it would give out at any point..

Another thing I just remember about the non operation of the remote functions can be explained in this forum, I would advise taking a quick look around!

Grayfox, I haven't ordered the chip yet but am about to do so. i just want to double check with you so i don't order the wrong one. Here is a photo from my DMD board behind the heat sink. Is the chip you recommended the same as this one? Also, Is the 9 wire cable that goes from the analog board to the top of DMD board available somewhere, Every so often my colorwheel doesn't spin on start up. If I jiggle this wire everything starts normally. Thank once again.

Hello Ajespo,

Nice clear picture, is there a way I can get you to up load a picture of the from of the DMD board? I don't want you confusing it with the DV board!

The front and the back of the DMD board that houses the DLP chip should look like the images I attached.

Given all the things you describe, I am still inclined to say its a DMD issue, yet you want to make sure that mentioned cable going to the colorwheel is good! sometimes I have to buy a complete set like the ones seen here:

https://www.discount-merchant.com/search.aspx?searchterm=cable%20set

if you can find one for your set, id recommend assuring a proper connection between the dmd and the colorwheel, just to rule it out...

Please let me know of your progress!

The chip picture I uploaded above is on the board inside the aluminum shell (behind the fan and heat sink). The plug/ cable is in the below picture on the upper left of the board. It connects to the analog board to the left of it.

Grayfox,

I ordered the chip you recommended and it does not fit my DMD board nor does it look like the existing DLP chip. I am having great difficulty figuring out which chip is right for my set. I have photos of the existing chip from my set that I've attached. Please stick with me on figuring this out or if anyone else has info I would greatly appreciate it. thanks.

Hello again!

I apologize for the confusion, but I can help find the correct part # using some numbers off the board.

I had suggested the part by the model number.. depending on where this was assembled this part might have changed my techs tell me. Could I trouble you with the part number off the board itself? I am having a hard time finding it on the images.

If you ordered from D-M that is my main supplier of lamps and parts, once we figure out which part you need I will see if they carry it and please let them know Andy from Fix your DLP forums advised you so they will grant an exchange or a full refund and a return label expediently..

Andy,

The site won't let me attach any more photos so here is the info. The label on the back of the DMD board reads" 04-10-18 BP94-00484A" Second line reads " 01259 L1/L2/L3/L4 110141124". It looks like manufacture date is 10/18/04 ( i bought the set in 01/05). Let me know if you need any more info or photos. thank for your help.

I apologize for the late reply, I was not able to figure out which part you needed, I forwarded this problem to some tech friends of mine with no luck for I have yet to receive a response. Have you had any luck to help anybody else out there with the similar issue?

Andy,

It is a funny coincidence that you reached out. My set is now working as of a couple days ago. I have a good amount of info since our last communication. First, I found that the proper replacement DLP chip for my HLP6163wx/xaa is Samsung 4719-001962. I purchased a brand new chip but it did not solve my above problems.

I then turned my sights on a DMD board. The direct replacement for my set is a BP94-00484A. I could not find any new boards available so I found a used one on eBay. The seller had purchased it from DM and never used it. I installed the board and it was no fix, would not start color wheel or lamp. Feeling very frustrated I started calling Samsung Parts/ J&J about substitutes. I called several times until I got to a very helpful guy who opened a case that was sent back to Samsung. The result was that the proper substitute part number for my DMD board was BP96-00678F. I ordered it and installed it. The set lit right up. I found that if you call Samsung Parts after 6 EST you get west coast operators who are far more helpful and informative. The folks based in NJ argued with me and were insistent they couldn't discuss part numbers, solutions or substitutes.

The board is slightly different in appearance, less caps and diodes but most noticeable was the heat management. The aluminum case that encapsulates the board now has an air duct that catches some of the airflow from the DLP chip fan and directs it to the heat sink on the chip to the right of the DLP chip. That heat sink is also much larger then my original. I can only assume this is where the heat overload that fried my board came from. I have run the set for a few lengthy (8 hours) periods with no problems. The only issue is I now have some picture degradation, what i call noise - dark squiggly lines, when the picture has a small checker pattern or on ball fields. Not sure where to start with that. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

This sounds like it worked halfway... And yes techs in the west coast are more patient, and I am not saying that just because I work out of CA but because i deal with clients Statewide!

I can maybe attribute this to the dmd chip if the board is working properly.. did you try both DMD chips?

I did not try both chips yet. That was going to be my first course of action. I just wanted to see what you thought first. I'll try that and post the results. thanks for your help Andy.
