Noise but not from the color wheel

Postby appleads » Wed Apr 13, 2016 2:27 am

I'm hoping someone has encountered this issue before and perhaps can confirm my suspicions. I am in the process of refurbishing a HL-S6167wx/xaa. It needed a thorough cleaning, a new Phillips lamp, new capacitors on the power supply and a new "air bearing" color wheel. The color wheel turns silently, and spins a long long time like a good color wheel should when "spun" by hand. Here's my problem. Change channels and you'll hear a groan from the set. I at first attributed this to a bad color wheel, but after changing the color wheel out for a brand new one, the "synching sound" or searching for signal sound is still there. My theory now is that this noise is coming from the DVI or analog input board. But why? The set runs perfectly, everything works the way it should, but if you change channels (I use a simple AIR antenna), or the signal shifts, you hear a strange 2 second or so "alignment" sound when it seems like the color wheel is "lining up" or synching up. Yet the color wheel is new and really silent. Is the DVI board somehow generating a buzz or some king of vibration? Any thoughts on what could be causing this set to issue a "synch up" sound whenever a new channel is selected? My next step will be to swap out the DVI/analog board in this set and hope that that will cure the issue, unless someone can come up with a different possible source for this most annoying noise. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Appleads,

Could it possibly be the ballast ? I know they sometimes make a humming or buzzing type sound so i'm wondering if maybe that could be the issue. Honestly I have never heard of a DVI board making this noise. Please let us know if you were able to get to the bottom of it. i will try to do a little research and see if maybe I can come with with something i regards to your issue.

Regards,

Well I took out the new color wheel I had installed, and put in a different new color wheel. Same sound. But maybe it's not a problem anymore. I sold it today for $250 and with any luck, it won't come back. It works perfectly fine, just makes some noise when "searching" for a signal/synch. Out of 20 or so Samsung DLP sets I've worked on, this is the one and only set that has made that noise. Let's hope it has found a good home.
