Can anyone tell what causes this:

its been doing this for years, but keeps getting worse. I have the brightness turned down as well as the dnle? turned off. It mainly happens on brightly lit scenes and sometimes freezes until i shut off the tv and turn it on, sometimes changing sources will clear the freeze. It seems to get a bit better after 20+ minutes (meaning it just flashes, but doesnt freeze as much after 20 minutes)

Re: samsung hlp6163wx freezing flashing problem
Hello,
This looks like a Digital Video board issue, what kind of input are you using? if this is a coaxial input could you try out a digital input like a component or HDMI? that way if the distortion goes away we can be sure ;)

Thanks for the reply fox.
This video was taken from the DVI input from a computer hooked up to the TV, however. It also happens on the Component input from the wii.

Re: samsung hlp6163wx freezing flashing problem
hmmm does the set have a HDMI input????

Re: samsung hlp6163wx freezing flashing problem
from an online spec sheet:
1 rear DVI connection for HDTV, 1 rear HDMI and 2 HD Component Video inputs
I only use the DVI and Component inputs. I dont have anything to test out the HDMI. Bought the TV back in 2004 and have had to change lamp once and the color wheel once. I have had to turn the brightness down as far as i can stand to keep this TV from being completely useless.

Oh, by the way the strange color bands are from my video camera, you dont see those with the naked eye.

Re: samsung hlp6163wx freezing flashing problem
This cannot be a lamp problem, I would try the input board first.. if you take off the back shell there should be a part number on the board with all the inputs if you get me that number i can find the cheapest price online ;) .... if digital signal is causing the symptom then the DV board must be fine...

Re: samsung hlp6163wx freezing flashing problem
Thanks fox...
Probably wont get to it until this weekend. Are there any other ways to test for possible problems while im taking it apart. Ive been meaning to pull out the whole thing and dust it off. The fact that it only seems to do this on bright scenes makes me think its not a connection issue (input board) but i dont really understand how these components work?
are you suggesting the input because its a cheaper item to try first? or because you have seen this before with input problems?
Thanks again for the quick responses.. just wanted to get you take on this decision.

to be honest a little bit of both! one its cheap and two ive seen this before! one test i know we can do is lower the resolution on your screen i.e. from 1080 to 720. and see if it still flickers! let me know!
Also a good dusting fixes problems like almost 10% of the time  go figure!!!

Re: samsung hlp6163wx freezing flashing problem
Okay, a good cleaning this weekend and ill do some source testing myself. I feed the tv its native resolution of 720p so its not that. And it used to work just fine with this setup. so something has gone screwy.
Ill get that part number and appreciate the support.

hhmmm i would still test the resistance and bring it down to 480... standard see if the flicker stops... anyways good luck with the cleaning and you are very welcome!
