This seems obvious, but all over the internet, people misread this simple observation....

5 blinks, pause, 5 more blinks - rinse, repeat

IS NOT THE SAME AS

5 blinks, 5 seconds solid, tv off.

If it's the first, then it's likely the lamp, if it's the second you've got bigger problems.

And yeah there's a huge difference, for what i know is that in some brands there's actually a time between the intervals of the flashing lights. i.e; 2 flashes, a 1 second pause, 2 flashes.... and they also have like 2 flashes, a half a second pause, 2 flashes...both are way different things. I just find that funny.

my shop says i have a bad coil causing a hiss, but rca doesn't make that coil anymore -- does anyone have a line on a coil for this tv or even the whole power supply? The part number (i think) is 270341R

Do you mean 5 seconds solid then off? Do you get sound? Do you hear the color wheel spin up? The more information you give us the more we can help! :)

Thats what they sent me when I requested the power supply board - call them.

My set an Infocus 61MD10 had the light engine replaced 2 years ago under warranty...now the blue lights comes on and blibks 5 times( i still have sound) and then does it again,thenafter about 30 seconds the picture comes back and all is good for about 10 mins or sometimes it goes for an hr...is this the bulb?

could be a couple of issues, the fact that it works, and then turns off sounds like a heat issue, i would take the back of the tv off and clean the ballast fan and any other amounts of dust you find in there first and see where that gets you...

i took the front panel off and cleaned out all dust and ballast fan,took out lamp assembly and there were no loose wires or anything out of the ordinary..replaced the front panel and then turned on TV...same issue.Tv comes on and plays fine for about 1-3 minutes and then goes blank..i still have audio the whole time,lights flash 5 times and then after about 3 minutes the video comes back and this repeats all night.has anyone seen this to be an issue with the bulb or should i be looking elsewhere...the light engine and bulb have been replaced back in Nov 2007.i dont think its heat because the TV has only been on about 5 minutes when this starts.Also screen seems to get dim right before this and when it comes back on there is a little video noise/static before picture comes back.

Hello Everyone

I've done a lot of reading here, and this is my first time asking. My new-to-me HD61LPW167 is trying to start up, and getting the famous flashing lights. 5x, a pause, then another 5x. There is a one month old Osram bulb in this, and a brand spanking new color wheel, installed by yours truly this afternoon. From what i gathered from the previous owner, the bulb went, he replaced it, worked for a bit, heard his color wheel grinding, and then no picture. I bought it, and swapped out the color wheel, and now i'm confused. There seems to be power going everywhere it is supposed to be, and you can see the red lights on in the chassis, fans spinning, even the speaker makes a little pop as they do when first turning on. But no lamp ignition. I thought i read a bad color wheel would cause the lamp to not ignite, but after replacing the wheel, still nothing. Might it be the lamp got jostled during the move to my house? Is that a known issue during transportation? Is there any way to test a lamp outside of the TV? Any and all help/suggestions on where to go from here would be appreciated.

Hi... I'm looking for swollen caps on my power board. Does any of this look suspect to you folks?

this looks almost identical to my PS. take a look at the caps outlined in red here:



Replacing these caps fixed my issue (of blinking lights for 5 seconds, solid for little bit and then turning off). I had a local shop do it here for $30 out the door - just brought the board down to them. 2 of them were swollen the other two LOOKED fined but were indeed bad.

Pretty similar! Maybe I'll run the board into a shop and try those caps... I'll post my results. Thanks for your help!

ok here we go my girl friend has an Infocus 61md10 which is the same as an RCA. So she tells me the picture in black in the center after changing out the lamp. So i read and find out that one of the lens is melted. We take it apart and i find the melted plastic lens I replaced it with a glass one. Durring the disassembly a cable comes unpluged from a small green board just above the lamp. Its a black cable with a small white clip that plugs into the end of the board. So i tell her no problem we will plug it back in when reassemble. So durring reassembly i plug it back in thinking it will only fit one way right. Wrong it will plug in both ways. Not knowing this we plug in the TV and get the 5 blinking blue lights pause 5 blinking blue lights then it turns off and repeats the same thing again overe and over. The fan on the left side of the mirror comes on, I guess thats the dm3 fan and i can hear something startup around the lamp but the fans there never come on. Now i need to know did i kill everything, are the pins to the clip bent, or is the lamp bad? Oh also she lets it on and it started doing this very rappid blinking of the blue lights and then went back to the same 5 blinks.

depends.. it's got something to do with either the lamp, ballast, or power supply. That's my guess. If you haven't replaced the lamp, you might want to try that first.. if you've already replaced the lamp, check the power supply to make sure none of the capacitors are blown out.

Well she bought a new lamp because it was doing the 5 lights thing and it worked for about a week. Then it burned the plastic lens and had the dark spot in the middle of the screen. So last night i was fixing that and now it wont come back on. I am guessing that the ballest is over loading the lamps and causeing them to burn out thats also why it melted the lens.
What do you think about that idea?

I think the clip where i bent the pins is on the CBA lamp power board. Do you think that would cause the lamp not to light and cause the 5 blinking lights?

HI.... replaced all 4 of those caps, and still a no-go. The repairman didn't find anything else wrong with the rest of the board. So still getting the 5 flashes. Any more ideas?

I did.... had it all apart, cleaned & back together again. Might this be a ballast issue?

OK, let’s start from the beginning.
First of all, dose your tv get any picture when you turn it on?
Do you get any audio?
Do you hear any strange noises coming from the back of the TV?
How long ago did you purchased your TV?
Have you ever replaced the lamp before?
If yes, how long ago?

Did you reset your lamp timer when you installed your new lamp?
Also, did you close the lamp door when you try to turn the TV on?
Have you cleaned the entire back of the TV free of dust and mold?
If you answer yes to all of these questions then im stomped.
Otherwise you should try them all.

Ok, the basics.
Do you hear any noises from the back of the TV? Did you close the lamp door when trying to turn the tv on? Did you clean the inside of the tv free of dust & mold?
Also could you take a photo of the cable and the damaged pins? Maybe I can help.

Oh wow, the pins were bent?

If the screen isn't centered, it's usually something to do with moving it around. If it is centered and there are black bars, usually fuzzy bars, that means the light tunnel could have collapsed. You're having all sorts of problems with this thing!

Correct, there might be a problem with the light tunnel; possibly one of the internal mirrors is misplaced.

The RCA lights of doom, as they were, could be a number or problems. I would have suggested a Philips lamp in that television, but definitely pull the lamp out and inspect it visually before purchasing a new lamp. Some very common problems with RCAs is the power supply going bad on you. The capacitors are notorious for blowing and you'll be able to see if you open the back up. I'm going to merge this post though, so please stay tuned, and perhaps someone else will have better insight than me!

Great posts and I really like the pics. I have a 61 inch Infocus / RCA DLP.
I have been reading up on the 5 blinking lights problem for quite some time.
IT sure seems it can be multiple issues. I replaced the bulb and things improved
but the prob still exists. From reading it sounds like it could be the ballast, power
supply or capacitors on the power supply board. The pics above are the first Ive
seen of these systems. My question is.....isnt there a service manual or does anyone
have something that points out the location of the various boards / devices on this TV?
Also does enyone know the different testing points that can help Identify the problem.
Im sure you can measured the voltage going into the ballast and the voltage out to
help determine if the ballast is working properly. Can you measure the capacitors?
I would not be able to identify the ballast....but I can do testing points and locate it if
given some direction..... Keep the posts and pics coming...
