60" WD-60735 Dark Bar on top

Recently just acquired a free Mitsubishi WD-60735. Didn't work when I got it, as to be expected.

I purchased a lamp for it, and now the TV works fine. Sort of. At the very top of the screen, there is a dark bar across. Not too dark, but I would say about 25% darker than the rest of the screen. It is about 3" wide.

No other issues, odd sounds, color, etc. I added a picture. I apologize for the poor quality, but hopefully it will show the issue.

Hello,

Hey free 60" TV? sign me up!

The oddest thing about this malfunction is the random culprits. The first thing to check is the lamp installation, unplug remove and reinstall and fit snugly will fix if its that.

The second would be the lamp not shining where its supposed to hehe, on the colorwheel, this is sometimes due to a generic or bootleg lamp, are you sure you purchased a Philips or Osram lamp? these are probably the only two lamp manufacturers I would use on a Mitsubishi, Philips if within my price range for they invented the darn things.

Do you remember where you purchased the lamp that got this TV going?

Just got a cheap one off ebay. Honestly at first I didn't even know a cheap-o lamp would make a difference (besides maybe lack of overall lifetime hours).

Not only that I didn't know, but I didn't want to spend big bucks on a lamp and find out 100 other things were wrong with the TV. Now that I know it works, maybe I will be more willing to spend the money to get a lamp it deserves.

I also noticed one side is probably only 2 1/2" wide and the other is 3" wide. So maybe it is just a matter of re-seating it in the tv.

Hello again,

I hope re installing the lamp took care of the alignment issue!

And yes for a working TV I normally replace it with an OEM Philips lamp which normally lasts at least 18 to 24 months for most of my clients, depending on how spent the ballast is.

Since a previous owner may have replaced the DMD chip on your set, the DMD board may not be aligned properly. This will cause a black band across the top or bottom. I've encountered this once, and it took me a while to figure out how to correctly re-align the dmd board to fix it. In my case the board that held the dmd chip was STUCK into position, so loosening the "adjusting screws" was doing nothing until I was finally able to free up the dmd board. Once that was done, I was able to re-align the dmd chip to the light tunnel and viola, all was well. I'll only add that MINUTE changes result in big movements on screen, and unless you want to run back and forth and back and forth (like I did about a dozen times) seeing what affect your tiny board movements are having, it's best to do this with two people. One to give you feedback on what's happening with the black band on screen, and you to loosen, adjust and re-tighten the board positioning screws.
