I am getting an error code of 12 along with a loud humming coming from the back of the unit. The humming is intermitent. Any ideas? The unit is 5 years old. Is it time to upgrade of get it fixed?

are you getting any discoloration or distortion of colors? this sounds like a colorwheel issue, if not maybe a fan...
