62vs69 hitachi

I have a hitachi 62vs69 with the lamp light flashing. I am hesitant to replace the bulb without knowing if it is bad, is there any way to tell?
Tha lamp light just blinks red, no power light or temp light. Is it possible that like on a projector you have an hour count that causes the tv to not come on? And if so do you need the remote to reset it?
