Ghosting, Shadows, Wavy Menus on RCA HD61LPW42 DLP RPTV

Detailed accounts of the problem, pictures of the symptoms, and attempted repairs are located here and here, so I won't go into agonizing detail, but here's the rundown -

Symptoms: The RCA DLP was given to me and fires up, but has image quality issues where there is purple/pinkish ghosting/shadowing to the right of everything, including the menus. Additionally, when something is actually hooked up and providing a video signal, the menus get "wavy" (as shown in the pictures in the previously linked threads).

Technical Details: Video input originates through the A/V input board (Composite, component, DVi) or DM2CR digital module (tuner, on-screen menus) and is transmitted to the formatter board for conversion to digital. According to the service guide, HD video inputted through the A/V board bypasses the DM2CR and is applied directly to the formatter. Video from the tuner is transmitted from the DM2CR directly to the formatter, bypassing the A/V board.

Preliminary Diagnosis: Because the test patterns generated by the light engine and formatter board are immune to the problem, I originally ruled the formatter out as a culprit, but because the issue affects both video from the DM2CR and the A/V Input board independently, I have to assume that a single point of unusual failure is more likely than two.

I recently purchased a used formatter board to replace the one I diagnosed as bad, but this does not change the symptoms. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could cause this?

Here are some additional pictures to highlight the nature of the problem (please see the linked threads at the top of the page for more pictures of the symptoms):

Hello,

Although the best thing would probably be to have a certified technician take a look at the the TV, from what you describe it sounds like the DMD board can actually be the culprit. The DMD board on the DLP TV is designed to reflect light through a color wheel by controlling a large number of mirrors. If the board is not working right, the light may not be reflected correctly, causing issues with the colors and even blurriness on the screen. Again I think a technician would be a wise choice but if you would rather go about it yourself I definitely wouldn't rule out the DMD board.

Regards,

probably not the light engine

Just to follow up, I was able to successfully fix the problem by replacing the capacitors on the formatter board. This issue appears to be similar in nature to the Toshiba "hyperboard" problems of yore.
