Samsung DLP HL72A650C1FXZA lights up but no picture/sound

Postby ActionMan1 » Fri Oct 14, 2016 1:23 pm

Problem with a 72" Samsung Projector DLP TV

TV Model HL72A650C1FXZA

TV Serial: AMBF3CKQB01234B

Version: OG01

Came into room while kids were watching TV, and the screen was frozen. Picture was clear. No sound. TV would not turn off by remote or front-pannel stand-by button. Had to pull the plug.

Plugged in and re-started, and the TV screen would not come on. Standby light comes on, then disappears when power button is pressed. Lamp light flashes constantly. No screen picture and no sound. TV will still not turn off by remote or front button. On-board 'channel +/-', 'source', 'vol +/-' buttons do nothing. Had to pull the plug again.

Replaced the bulb with high quality (I think) one at the link below. TV has the same problems even with the new bulb, except that now when the TV turns on, the screen illuminates but stays a flat black/grey colour. Lamp light still flashes constantly. Hardware buttons and remote still do nothing.

I am asking for advice on a way to test what components need to be replaced, or a suggestion on order of components to investigate, as I have little experience with this type of TV. Can anyone help or suggest the next step, as the next components seem to be $200 and up, and I don't want to spend that kind of money without some level of confidence that it will help solve the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is the replacement bulb used:

ActionMan1,

Can you confirm that the lamp does come on ? Also can you check to see if when the TV powers on if you hear any buzzing or humming type sounds as these sometimes point to issues with the colorwheel or ballast. Please advise I will be checking for your responce to reply to you right away.

Thanks you.

I can confirm that the lamp comes on, and can be seen brightly shining through the back panel.

I don't believe I heard any grinding or whirring, but will double check tonight and confirm.

Ok, additional info.

No whirring other than normal fan noise.

When TV is in standby, both "standby / temp" and "lamp" lights on front of set are blinking constantly.

When power button is pressed, lamp lights up (van be seen at back of tv and screen becomes bright but no picture). Lamp light remains blinking constantly.

When buttons on remote are pressed, "timer" light blinks while button is pushed, but no response from the TV.

Recorded a video of inside back pannel, which I will upload if necessary. When power button is pressed, power supply clicks on, ballust ignights and lamp lights immediately. Just no image on the screen and no sound or response from the remote.

Hello,

Yes please check in case you do hear these sounds as these usually point to problems with either colorwheel or ballast.

Hello,

Sorry for the delayed response. I wish I had better news but it sounds like your problem can be either the main board or even the dmd board. Main board would be the cheaper repair. The following link will take you to a pic of a main board so you can see what it looks like. Its very hard to determine exactly which part is the culprit as both give same symptoms.

Update:

I got hold of the official samsung TV service manual for my model. Following a troubleshooting flow diagram in the manual, and from advice on another forum, I replaced the DMD board with the replacement BP96-02092A part.

Unfortunately, the TV still shows the exact same symptoms, and has not improved even with the replacement board.

From what you and others have said, the next logical step seems to be the main board, but I would like to check the color wheel before i jump into replacing more large & expensive parts. Is there a way I can check if the color wheel is spinning and functioning while the TV is assembled and powered up?

All the fans seem to be working ok, and the ballast and bulb definitely light up when the TV is turned on. The screen brightens up but no picture or sound, and neither the menu or source buttons work (no menus appear). I'm assuming I would at least get sound if the problem was only with the color wheel? Is this the case?
