m50wh72s won't turn on FIXED!

Postby mitchkramez » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:51 pm

i have a rca m50wh72s. the power light blinks 5x, stays solid for 5 seconds and the turns off. no sound, no picture. the fans don't turn, i hear an incredibly faint whining from the ballast, but i have to put my ear right up next to it to even hear that. I've also noticed a small red light inside the "inputs" metal cage on the left side of the cage close to the powersupply board.

I've measured the voltage coming from the PS to the ballast at about 336v... but it was that even when the power was off... is that normal?

The TV was working fine until i went to turn it on, and this. No noises, no buzzing etc. The lamp physically looks ok, and based on the pattern of the blinking, i'm guessing it's not the lamp... does anyone have any ideas?

I'm guessing i can't just stick my multimeter probes in the empty bulb receptacles (bulb removed) and measure that voltage.

I have the same thing going on, the first problem we have is that we bought an RCA ;) My power button was blinking 5 times also, my TV is 3 years old so i'm thinking the lamp is bad! It wasn't, took it to a TV repair place and they said it was a bad color wheel, so I gotta color wheel coming from RCA (Bad customer service) If your not getting video and audio its more than likely a bad color wheel!

I don't have the same model # as yours but I called RCA and told them that I needed a new color wheel and gave them the part #, they told me that they didn't carry that same part # anymore but it had been replaced with another part#! I just took the color wheel out of mine today, and like you said the color wheel looks fine. I've got a new one coming in a day or two, for I was told by a TV repair place ($50) that it was bad. I started with replacing the lamp,($140) now the color wheel,($140) whats next the ballast? I checked my capacitors and they also seem to be fine! RCA should recall these

here's a picture of the bad caps on my power supply... hoping to get this fixed tomorrow... notice how the tops of the two caps in the front of the picture have bubbled tops... they're not flat like all the other capacitors... that means they're bad...

Glad you got it figured out. Those RCAs are notorious for bad power supplies!

Eddie, thanks... i actually brought it into the shop this morning because the power supply was hissing everything worked fine still, it was just kinda irritating :). Hopefully they'll find something simple on it and just be able to replace a few more caps (I don't see any others that are bad visually) or maybe it's just the switchmode transformer in there... fingers crossed!
