Genuine lampsHow do you spot counterfeit projector lamps?

There’s been an explosion of websites selling “generic, compatible” replacement lamps. It can be tough to tell the difference between the authentic projector lamp with a guarantee and counterfeit projector lamps. Here are some telltale signs.

Price

Projector lamps are complicated and sophisticated lamps — not your ordinary light bulb. The cost of creating this advanced technology is reflected in the price. If you come across a projector lamp that seems like an incredible bargain—run because it’s a forgery. The lowest price for a genuine lamp is every only 20% off the manufacturer’s price. This is an industry standard agreed upon by companies creating genuine lamps hybrids and the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Anything else is a fake.

Compatibility double speak

Statements such as “100% Brand New OEM Equivalent” and “OEM Compatible Lamps” and “guaranteed to be 100% compatible with the factory original” should make you suspicious. These statements are euphemisms used by copycat manufacturers bootleg companies to convince you to buy their inferior product.

Made in China

If you’re buying from a place with no direct customer service line, no direct email and no salesperson to contact, then that may also be a sign that the company is selling counterfeit. You should be able to easily contact the company and there should be a clearly outlined return policy. Almost 100% of the companies located in the China are selling counterfeit lamps that have no guarantee or money back refund.

Strange part numbers

It’s easy for the counterfeit companies to simply use the part number as the manufacturer, many don’t bother to even make sure they have the correct number. Look at the manufacturer’s website for the part number and compare it against the one being used by the company offering the incredible bargain. If the two don’t match, don’t buy.

Suspicious labels with spelling mistakes

Black market products often have labeling that looks unprofessional or there is clearly a knockoff label. If you the manufacturers label looks suspicious, check underneath for an original label. Often companies will put a knock-off label over top of their own.

No original codes

Check for the original code. Original lamps are stamped with a code identifying each company. See the chart below for more information. If the lamp is missing this code then it’s not adhering to the ANSI standards for bulbs and should be avoided.  Codes such a PL or GL are codes used by copy-lamp manufacturers.

Lamp NameCode
PhillipsUHP
OsramP-VIP
PhoenixSHP
UshioUMPRD
MitsubishiVLT
Hewlett PackardL1
IBM31
EPSONELP

Naked bulbs, no cage

Counterfeit lamps are often sold with no cage just the light bulb. Phillips has authorized MI Technologies to sell their replacement bulbs since this company also manufactures its own cages.  It’s this is a rare exception to the rule, however. Most companies selling only light bulbs are selling counterfeits.

ceiling_mounted_projectorA ceiling mounted projector offers theater-style viewing if installed properly!

However, installing a ceiling mounted projector can be a bit of a challenge unless you do your homework first.

Follow our 10-step guide to help you install your DLP projector onto the ceiling.

1. Start with the ceiling

The ceiling height controls the screen heights and width, which then controls how far back your projector, must go. What kind of ceiling are you dealing with? There are three basic types:

  • Cathedral: Any tall, high rise ceiling resembling those found in a church.
  • Structural:  The main ceiling, usually flat and at least eight feet high.
  • Suspended: Also known as a drop or false ceiling, this is a secondary ceiling hung below the main ceiling. This is most typically found in an office setting.

After determining what type of ceiling you have, buy the appropriate ceiling mount adaptor kit.

2. Flush or extended mounting

Flush mounting to the ceiling allows four to six inches between the ceiling and projector. You won’t be able to do flush mounting with a cathedral ceiling but can be used on structural and suspended ceilings. There must be enough airflow around the projector to allow it stay cool.

3. Mounting kit

You’ll need to buy the proper mounting kit for your projector. There aren’t really any generic mounting systems that work properly. Each projector has different placements for its mounting holes and ventilation units so it’s crucial to buy the correct kit for your projector. Most projectors are mounted upside down and the image is then inverted using the menu options. Don’t substitute your mounting unit.

4. Screen height

Your screen is an important part of the whole scenario. You need to have the right placement as well the correct height. Take your ceiling height, subtract three feet and that will give you your maximum screen height. Minimum height is three feet off the floor.

5. Screen width

You’ll also need to figure out the maximum width of your screen. If you’re using the projector for predominantly business presentations you want to install the 4:3 aspect ratio screen and the 16:9 aspect ratio screen for watching television or movies. For the 4:3 screen, take your maximum screen height and multiply it by 1.33 and if installing a 16:9 screen, take your maximum screen height and multiply it by 1.78—that number will be your maximum screen width.

6. Throw Distance

After figuring out the screen dimensions, you’ll need to determine how far back to install the projector. This is known as the “throw distance.” Your throw distance depends on your particular model; each projector throws a different image. Consult your manual for the manufacturer throw chart listing image size based on distance from the screen. This will determine exactly where the projector should be mounted.

7. Ventilation

Your projector must have enough airflow so its cooling system will operate properly. A projector too close to the ceiling will overheat causing it to shut down or have a shorter lamp life. Most manufacturers recommend a three-foot radius for proper ventilation.

8. Mount the Projector

Locate the ceiling stud (use a stud finder to locate the appropriate beam). Your ceiling mounting kit will have instructions and all the necessary hardware for mounting your projector.

9. Adjust the Image

After making sure the projector is level on the mount you’re ready to adjust the picture. Align the picture using the zoom, horizontal and vertical lens shift controls. Adjust the focus. If your projector doesn’t have the vertical lens shift you will have to adjust the height of either the screen or projector. Your specific user manual will have more information.

10. Stay patient

Getting your projected mounted on the ceiling and everything working takes a bit of time. Stay patient knowing that once you have everything working, you won’t have to do any more adjustments. Your ceiling mounted projector will give you a great image and enhance your presentation or viewing enjoyment.

longer_life_projector_lamp

Follow these tips to make your projector lamp last longer!

Like any light bulb, a projector lamp have an expected lifetime. The number of hours you get from your projector lamp depends on how often you use the projector as well as the projector brand. Most projectors offer between 1500 and 2000 hours of lamp life. Here are eight tips to extend your DLP projector lamp life.

Watch the dust. Your DLP projector operates best in a relatively dust-free environment. Be sure that your projector is not installed near any open windows exposing it to dust and pollen from the outdoors.

Avoid frequent on and offs. Every time you fire up the DLP projector lamp you create a power surge that puts stress on the connections in the lamp.  Light up your projector when you are read to use it and avoid frequent switching on and off.

Check the heat. An overheated projector puts stress on the projector lamp and can cause it to explode. Make sure there is enough airflow around the projector particularly if it’s been permanently mounted.  The mounting plates should never block the fan vent.

Give it a rest. Don’t operate the projector non-stop. Turn it off and let it stand for at least one hour ever 24 hours. An average use of four to five hours per day will ensure longer projector lamp life.

Let it cool. Your projector has a cooling fan that keeps the projector lamp from overheating. Allow the projector fan to run through it cycle and shut down before turning off the projector. Flicking the off switch before the projector has cooled can cause the projector lamp to crack.

Keep it clean. The air filters on your projector are designed to keep the air flowing around your projector and prevent overheating. Keep them cleaned of dust and debris.  Be sure to clean the air filters every 3 months or more often if there is a lot of dust. Regular maintenance will prolong the DLP projector lamp life.

Go eco. Some projectors have the “Eco mode” or “Lamp Economy Mode” that reduces projector lamp brightness by 20% while extending the lamp life by 50%. Chances are you won’t even the reduction. Most projectors are shipped with the factory setting at maximum brightests so you will have to change the lamp mode manually.

Install authentic lamps.  Generic lamps may seem like a bargain but they offer a much shorter lamp life. Advertised as “compatible” these counterfeit lamps are prone to explosions. Genuine OEM projector lamps offer a much longer lamp life. Beware of knock-off  projector lamps.

RPTV troubleshooting guide -- TV won't turn onHaving trouble getting a picture with your RPTV? Before paying a service technician, review these rear-projection TV troubleshooting suggestions.

1. Check your connections. A loose power cable can trigger the sensor on the back cover and prevent the DLP set from turning on.  Check the power cable, the wall connection and the back cover to make sure they are secure.

2. Check your lamp. Your RPTV will have warning lights to let you know your lamp is coming to the end of it’s cycle and needs to be replaced. Your manual will show you what the lights mean. Check the lamp to make sure the bulb is still working and that the lamp has been properly installed. If you need to replace the lamp be sure to buy a genuine OEM lamp that will fire properly. Avoid generic lamps.

3. Check your temperature. Rear-projection TVs will shut off automatically if they overheat. Make sure the TV is not too close to the wall—you need airflow around the entire set. Check that the ventilation ports are free of dust or debris. Room temperature should be close to 72 degrees. A hot room will make the RPTV overheat and switch off.

4. Check for the click. The ballast is the component that ignites the lamp with a blast of energy. You should here a clicking noise when the ballast is jump-starting the lamp. No clicking means no power to the ballast. You may also hear repeated rapid clicking from the ballast with no results indicating the ballast can’t start up the lamp or the ballast may light up the lamp only intermittently. Both of these conditions mean it’s time to replace the lamp. However, if you have recently replaced the lamp then you may need a new ballast.  Consult your owner’s manual for more information.
