The Sony PFM-50C1 has a flat panel display with a screen size of 50 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. The Hitachi 42HDT20 is a flat pane l plasma television that uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. the screen size seems to be very popular among most buyers even though the price of $9000 is not exactly inviting. And that too after a drop of more than $1000. The set offers a native display resolution of 1024 by 1024 and has an aspect ratio of 16:9. The silver cabinet of the set is quite attractive with a glossy black bezel. The set tips the scales at 86 pounds, which is quite reasonable considering the size.

The Hitachi 42HDT20 delivered quite a good performance even in a brightly lit room, which is not usual for a television using the plasma technology. The Sony KF-60DX100 is a rear projection television that uses the LCD technology and has a screen size of 60 inches when measured diagonally. As far as price and quality are concerned the CRT’s give the best performance. However, a typical rear projection television, which uses the CRT technology, will weigh more than 250 pounds and take up a lot of space. This made it quite necessary to search for different technologies, which gave rise to the DLP, LCD, D-ILA and a few other technologies. Even though most of the technologies have not been able to match the black levels and contrast ratios offered by a CRT television, they have made plenty of progress as far as the picture quality is concerned.

The Sony KF-60DX100 offers an aspect ratio of 16:9 and has a design, which at first glance looks very much like the plasmas. The Philips 55PP9701 is a rear projection television that is high definition ready. The design of the set is very simple and to some extent can even be said to be modest and yet very sleek. The cabinet is full black and the front side has been given a very clean look. The very thin bezel makes the screen appear to be larger while the set seems to be smaller. The set, at the time of release, was priced at a whopping $4700. Even though the set gives a fantastic performance out of the box, calibration improves the performance of the set to a great extent and offers a picture quality which makes you think that it was worth paying that kind of money for.

Overall, there was not much that the set went wrong with and will not matter much during daily viewing. The reds produced by the set seemed to be a lot more oversaturated. The Philips 55PP9701 was exceptionally good with the high definition broadcasts as well as DVD’s. The remote is a bit of trouble as only a few of the buttons light up and may take a while to learn where all the buttons are. Apart from the minor complaints, the performance of the set is fantastic and does not disappoint at all.

As it is you need to shell out quite a bit of money when it comes to buying a set having a screen size of 70 inches. The Panasonic TH-42PX25 is a high definition television that uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. With the advancement in the plasma technology, it has been proven that the plasmas are no longer the underdogs when it comes to producing deep black levels. Earlier when the black levels were compared, the sets using the plasma technology were referred to as the also-ran. This is not the case any more with the plasmas producing very deep black level which has helped it climb onto the top steps of the podium quite a few times. The cabinet has been very well designed and the use of the curves at various places has given it a very stylish and elegant look. It is primarily silver in color with a black bezel used to surround the screen.

The remote is just as good as the cabinet and has plenty of buttons when compared to other plasma televisions. A glow in the dark button controls the backlighting of the buttons of the remote. Most of the inputs are located at the back of the cabinet while the HDMI input has been placed at the top. This can cause a little bit of a problem if you are planning to hang the set or even mount it at a height. The burn in issues that are normally associated with the plasmas was not even visible with this set. Overall, the performance of this set is fantastic and there are not many problems to worry about either.

The Panasonic TH-42PX600U is a high definition television that has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. Panasonic has had a good track record when it comes to creating stylish cabinets and yet make each cabinet different from the other. This cabinet too does just that. It is predominantly silver in color with a thin black bezel used to house the screen. The shape and design of the cabinet should more or less satisfy most people. The Panasonic TH-42PX600U is another example of the drop in prices of most of the plasma television sets inspite of the progress made by the technology.

The Hitachi P42H401 is a high definition plasma television that uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. This moderate screen size is one of the most preferred sizes among the people. The LCD’s already have the upper hand over the plasmas considering that the latter had a hard time fitting 1920 by 1080 pixels into a 42-inch screen size. As the first 1080p plasma came, a few months back, the market was already flooded with LCD’s having 1080p capability. These LCD’s are even cheaper than the plasmas and there is no guessing where the people are turning their heads.

The native display resolution of the Hitachi P42H401 is 1024 by 1080. Even though the horizontal resolution is much less than 1920, the vertical resolution ensures that the set will be referred to as a 1080p display. The resolution however is not progressive. The Hitachi P42H401 is priced around $1700 and it would be safe to say that this is Hitachi’s way of competing with the LCD’s. Not that the image is perfect right out of the box but calibration failed to make much of a difference to the image quality.

The set struggles a bit with the standard definition content. The darker images look a bit reddish. The green color point lacks the accuracy although this is something that I have noticed with most plasmas.

LG RU-42PX11 42 inch Plasma EDTV

The LG RU-42PX11 is an enhanced definition television that uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches. As far as the performance is concerned, it does not perform badly although it is not the best in any of the categories either. However even this average, middle of the road performance has given the set a high rating. The cabinet is well designed and has been given an all silver look. The inbuilt speakers are attached inside the cabinet at the sides of the screen. A very thin black colored frame has been used to house the screen.

The LG RU-42PX11 was superb when it came to processing and did not show any jagged edges in most of the scenes. It also did not crush the whites which most of the plasmas do to various extents. However, the colors lack the vibrancy and it would be fair to call them muted or undersaturated. Even though the colors are not that bad, they appear to be muted because the contrast ratio of the set falls slightly short. The set was absolutely fantastic when it came to detail levels and should give the top of the line sets a run for their money. The performance of the set out of the box is average and does not show much improvement even after calibration.
