The Samsung HL-S5688W is a rear projection television, which has a 56-inch screen size when measured diagonally and uses the DLP technology. The DLP technology has had plenty of criticism from the press especially considering that it is still developing. The non-accurate, oversaturated colors and dreadful black levels have been assaulted the most by many of the reviewers. Samsung does seem to have taken notice and have come up with a fantastic response in the form of this set.

The Samsung HL-S5688W offers excellent performance and nearly all the points of criticism have been taken care of. The full display resolution of the set is 1920 by 1080, which is also known as 1080p. The depth of the set is barely more than 16 inches, which is quite commendable for a DLP TV. It uses a 5-segment color wheel to give excellent colors. Out of the box the colors are far too oversaturated.

The cabinet is very sleek and yet very simple with a very thin frame around the screen. The set has plenty of features to keep you occupied for quite a while. It has an input for digital cable and a CableCard slot, which is quite useful for watching cable TV. The USB jack enables the user to view photographs or videos or listen to MP3 audio directly from the USB device. A PC input is also provided although the resolutions are not that flattering.

The picture especially in the movie mode puts the Samsung HL-S5688W in contention for the best RPTV.

The Samsung HL-S5686W is a rear projection television, which uses the DLP technology and has a 56” screen size when measured diagonally. The latest range of the DLP televisions is offering picture qualities, which are comparable to that of the plasmas with greater screen sizes and yet are much cheaper. The above factors make the DLP a much better option in case hanging the television on the wall is not a priority.

The full display resolution of the Samsung HL-S5686W is 1280 by 720, which means that all the input signals will be displayed at 720p. The native resolution may be less than what may be wanted but at a screen size of 56 inches, even having 1080p may not have much of a difference. The Samsung LN-T4061 is a LCD television and has a 40 inch screen size when measured diagonally. Except for the panel of this LCD the rest of the set including the design is quite similar to that of most of the plasmas. The cabinet looks fantastic with its relatively simple all black design. Most of the inputs are located on the backside with some of them provided on the sides for easy access. The depth of the set is a bit less than 12 inches and weighs just over 46 pounds which is quality commendable.

The set offers a full display resolution of 1920 by 1080, which is also known as 1080p. It is the highest possible display resolution available today. The Samsung LN-T4061 gives a fantastic performance when it comes to displaying high definition content. However, it would be fair to say that it struggles when it comes to standard definition content. The set is equipped with a standard remote, which thankfully is backlit. The CableCard slot is one of the few things that are missing.

The Samsung LN-T4061 is a very good option if you are sure to be viewing high definition content. It offers wide viewing angles with rated contrast ratios, which can be measured upto 10000:1. VGA and USB inputs have also been included to connect PC or digital devices respectively.

The Samsung LN-R328W is a high definition television set that uses the LCD technology and has a screen size of 32 inches. The cabinet has been kept fairly simple and modest. The thin bezel around the screen is fully black in color with a trademark silver ‘V’ shaped area at the bottom of the screen. The stand too is silver in color to match the set and misses the swivel. The set though is just 39 pounds in weight and will not be much of a problem to move.

The full display resolution offered by the set is 1366 by 768, which is more than enough to display all incoming signals at 720p. All the input signals are scaled to fit the available pixel area. As far as the image quality is concerned the set was the winner or one of the winner while displaying any content. The colors were rich and vivid and more accurate than any other set, which were used for comparison.

Even the features of the set confirm that the set is modest with not many frills. It does not have the CableCard slot and has a single analog tuner, which means that you will have to go in for additional set top boxes. Even though the unit is basic for a comparatively higher price, it is not totally off the hook to buy it only for the image quality.

The Samsung HP-S4253 is a high definition television, has a 42-inch screen size when measured diagonally, and uses the plasma technology to deliver a stunning picture. The shiny black finishing of the set gives it a classy look although it is a bit too reflective. The use of the plasma technology prevents several hazards like the screen burn in which are prevalent in other technologies.

However, the CableCard slot is missing and may be the cause of some discomfort for a few users. The antiglare screen works very well and makes the viewing experience a lot comfortable. The depth of the set is less than 4 inches, which should attract quite a lot of attention from potential buyers.

LG Electronics 42PC1DA 42 inch Plasma Television

The LG 42PC1DA is a moderate size television with a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. The price of the set makes it pretty clear that LG have designed the set with the higher class in mind. Although the price of the set may make you take out most of your savings, the performance is one of the best ever seen. If you are interested in a moderately sized plasma television, the least I can say is that atleast take a look at this one.

The set offered high level of details with rich and accurate colors for high definition, standard definition as well as DVD content.

The price may have many buyers rolling their eyes but one thing is for certain that you will be paying for the quality that you get.

The RCA M50WH185 is a high definition television, which uses the DLP technology and has a screen size of 50 inches when measured diagonally. The best thing about the set is that it is quite inexpensive without skipping out on the features, functions and performance. The cabinet is well designed with a contour shape, which may not appeal to all the users. It is primarily black colored with a silver strip at the bottom. The front side of the cabinet has been given the clean look by moving the controls to the right side of the cabinet.

The full display resolution of the set is 1280 by 720 although it accepts all signals upto 1080i. All the incoming signals are scaled to fit the available pixel area. The performance of the set especially during high definition scenes was exceptional. The colors were very natural with sharp contrast. The detail levels though did seem to suffer especially in the background of a few scenes. Overall, the set gave an above average performance in most of the tests. The audio quality also proves that it is more than capable of keeping up with the stunning video.

The silver remote included with the set can control multiple devices and yet is quite easy to use. The depth of the set is just a bit more than 15 inches and also has a CableCard slot. Overall, considering the price to performance ratio the set is surely one of the best options.

The Philips 42PF9631D is a high definition television having a 42-inch screen size when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. The cabinet has a wide bezel, which is quite unlike the trend that is seen today with the bezels becoming thinner and thinner. The bezel is black in color with a silver colored strip at the bottom used to house the speakers.

If you are planning to mount the set on the wall then there is an interesting feature, which you should know about – the Philips “Ambilight”. This function consists of two LED’s which are fitted at the back side of the cabinet which emit light on to the walls to create an effect. The user can specify the color of the lights or the television itself chooses the lights depending upon the color of the image on screen. This feature is even said to reduce the eyestrain especially while watching TV in darkened rooms. As a worse case condition if you don’t like the Ambilights you can even turn them off.

The Philips 42PF9631D offers plenty of inputs to hookup your devices to which is something that most plasmas are not that good at. The set offers a full display resolution of 720p. it is just 4.5 inches which is a another feature which should catch your eye as soon as you look at it. Sony Bravia 40W3000 40 inch LCD TV

The Sony 40W3000 is a 40-inch TV set and uses the LCD technology. The best things first: there is very little that the set does not have or does not do right. All the bad things follow all the good things but that is not the case here. The price of the set is one of the things that could have been better although it is not worth calling bad. The price is slightly higher than most of the other LCD sets of a similar size. Least said you can be sure that you are paying for quality.

With most of the manufacturers providing most of the inputs at the back and some at the side, Sony has gone a step further by providing some inputs even on the top of the cabinet. However, this can cause some distress if you are planning to mount the set. The Sony 40W3000 has a high contrast ratio of 1800:1, which is commendable for a set using the LCD technology. The full display resolution is 1920 by 1080 i.e. 1080p. The fully black cabinet is just 10 ½ inches in depth which is reasonable even though it may not be the best. The remote is a bit too long but is programmable and backlit.

The Sony 40W3000 falls short on few of the minor factors. However, these factors do not affect or interfere with the performance of the set, which is quite brilliant.
