The Panasonic TC-32LX60 is a high definition LCD TV set and has a 32 inch screen size when measured diagonally. Panasonic takes all the accolades with the design of this set and seems to have made designing its forte. The cabinet is predominantly silver in color with a black frame used to house the screen. The swivel base is fantastic and lets you rotate the set to improve the visibility. The full display resolution offered by the set is 1366 by 768 which is slightly more than 720p.The Panasonic TC-32LX60 should be and possibly could be the best in the image sharpness category. As far as the viewing modes are concerned, the vivid mode is best for gaming consoles while the Cinema mode is fantastic for watching high definition content. The audio quality of the set however, fails the video especially at high volumes. The horizontal viewing angles are fantastic although the vertical viewing angles fail to render the same effect.

The contrast ratio is 3000:1 which is quite high for an LCD television. The depth of the Panasonic TC-32LX60 is slightly less than 12 inches. The width of the set 31 inches and the height is just over 24 inches. The set tips the weigh scales at a measly 43 pounds. The set is equipped with three composite inputs and a single HDMI input. The provision of a single component inputs however may cause a few problems while hooking up the additional devices.

The LG 42LB5D is a 42 inch TV set which uses the LCD technology. On paper LG seems to be getting many of the things right in terms of features although this effect does not translate into performance. They have included the HDMI 1.3 and made the set 1080p capable with a very fast response time. Yet it struggles a bit when it comes to performance which has the users feeling a bit let down.

The depth of the set is a mere 3 ½ inches, which is quite creditable and gives the plasmas a run for their money. The plasmas offer better picture quality than most LCD’s but also are a lot costlier. As said above the set has a full display resolution of 1080p i.e. 1920 by 1080 which is the highest resolution available today and so is the HDMI 1.3. The response time is extremely fast in the region of 5 ms and is one of the fastest today.

To say the least the menu system is pathetic and quite tedious. Even for the smallest of tasks the user has to go hunting through the menu systems. Most of the inputs are on the backside of the set while a few of them are located on the side for easy access. The provision of the USB input enables the user to attach external media devices to view photos or videos or listen to audio files directly from the device.

The Philips 42PFL7432D is a LCD television, which has a screen size of 42 inches. The screen is coated with an antiglare covering to reduce or even eliminate the reflections from the light sources inside the room. The dimensions of the set are 42 inches in width, 27 inches in height while the depth is just over 4 ½ inches. The set tips the scales at around 76 pounds, which is quite commendable considering its size. The depth of the set deserves a special mention here as at 4 ½ inches it is more than comparable to or even better than some of the plasmas, not to mention at a much lower price.

The Philips 42PFL7432D has a full display resolution of 1920 by 1080, which is the highest possible resolution available today. The rated contrast ratio is around 8000. The set is viewable from almost anywhere in front of the screen (well I mean it from the point of view of viewing angles). The second most noticeable thing (apart from the depth) is seen as soon as you start the television. This feature is called Ambilight in which a two LED’s fitted on the back of the cabinet bounces light off the wall. The colors can be chosen by the user or the TV chooses it to match the onscreen image.

Considering the features the Philips 42PFL7432D deserves quite a lot of accolades although they could have done much better about the light coming from the front of the set.

The Samsung LTP468W is a high definition television which uses the LCD technology. Today it is one of the larger LCD televisions with a full display resolution of 1080p. Although this should not last for long with better and larger sets getting introduced into the market almost every week. With 100 inch televisions on the horizon things are bound to get better. The internal upconversion smoothens out the images produced by most of the 1080i signals that plenty of HDTV channels prefer.

The cabinet of the set has been very well designed with very light curves being the preferred form. The slate black screen with metal trimmed cabinet looks fantastic. The set also has an oval shaped stand which is optional. The rear panel of the set does not have any ventilation holes which can make it look very ugly. This allows you to use the set with the stand or even wall mount it.

As far as the performance is concerned the picture is very bright as is the case with most of the LCD’s which lets you watch it comfortably even in the most brightly lit rooms. Out of the box the settings of the Samsung LTP468W are fairly close to the ideal settings although a little bit of tweaking does mange to extract the optimum out of the set. In some of the scenes the blacks do seem to be slightly greenish but nothing too alarming. Overall the set is a very good option if you are looking for a big flat panel display.

The Zenith D60WLCD is one of the larger rear projection television sets, which use the LCD technology with a screen size of 60 inches when measured diagonally. The cabinet has been exquisitely designed and almost looks like a plasma when seen from the front side. It is predominantly silver and gray with black stripes on both sides of the screen. On the back side though it’s quite a different story. Normally a plasma is 4-5 inches in depth while this set is around 17 1/2 inches which is quite reasonable for an LCD.

The full display resolution of the set is 1280 by 720 which means that all the input signals will be displayed at 720p. the Zenith D60WLCD does take a minute or two to get warmed up and may cause a little bit of distress to the users who are not used to this. But once fully warm the set gives some of the sharpest pictures with rich and vibrant colors. It is also very high brightness and should not cause any problems if used in rooms having a lot of light. The resolution was fantastic and the color was not oversaturated which is the problem in most LCD’s although the black levels were slightly off the mark.

The set is fully equipped including a standard remote which thankfully is backlit. Overall the Zenith have packed in enough features to make the set deliver a satisfactory performance.

Generally we do not encourage this…but we’ve seen too many people email about lamp failures…about bad color wheels…about defective ballasts…and even the light engines!  We know it’s difficult to justify buying another projection DLP TV if you’ve gone through a few lamps…a new ballast…or surely at least a color wheel.  RCA’s are prone to these failures, unfortunately…and they can become a money pit!

RCA’s are emphasis for the loud “whining noise” the color wheel makes when its bearings start to give out.  Even if you still have experienced a distored picture, whether it be discoloration or flickering on the screen, if you heard the color wheel “whine,” you will see those symptoms soon.

For color wheels and ballast issues, it seems like you’ve got no choice other than the factory.

For that reason, here’s RCA’s contact details:
In Warranty TVs (purchased within the last year): 800-338-0376

Out of Warranty TVs (TV sets older than 1 year): 866-723-6486

For lamp replacement, we suggest Discount-Merchant.com.  If you have a TYPE B lamp, you most likely have a OSRAM lamp inside your TV.  Type A lamps should be fitted with Philips lamps.  Per our experience and feedback, we only recommend replacing your old lamp with a Philips brand lamp, regardless if it was fitted with an OSRAM or a Philips originally.

The Philips lamps tend to last longer, per our datalogging, nearly 2,000 hours longer on average!  Don’t settle for the inferior lamp…purchase the Philips brand replacement bulb.

GENERAL Disclaimer: Never purchase an LTI, APO, or third-party aftermarket brand lamp.  If we had it our way, we would get rid of UHP lamps all together and install the new LED Based Light Engines.  But since we cannot do that, the next best thing is to go with the innovator in UHP technology: Philips.

Good luck! 🙁

The RCA HD61THW263 is a rear projection television, which uses the DLP technology and has a 50-inch screen size. The RCA HD61THW263 has enough style and punch to catch your attention. The cabinet looks outstanding with the speakers placed on either sides of the screen. The screen is surrounded by a very small frame, which is hardly visible from a distance.

The set created a lot of stir in the market and not unduly considering that it occupies less than 7 inches in depth while other DLP TV sets are still are hovering around 15 inches mark. If the depth has you wondering then let it be known that the set weighs a measly 135 pounds which is comparable with a plasma which is normally just 4 to 5 inches in depth. The set produces high quality images with saturated colors and high detail.

The inputs are housed beneath a panel at the side of the set, which keeps them out of sight yet easily accessible. The set has plenty of input interfaces so that you can connect all the devices that you want to and yet have plenty of them left empty. The remote has plenty of buttons and is illuminated which will have many users breathing a sigh of relief. The provision of the CableCard slot enables the user to watch cable TV without having to buy external set top boxes.

The Zenith R56W36 is a high definition monitor and has a 56 inch screen size when measured diagonally. The monitor presents itself as a very good option especially if you are looking for a large screen size without having to take out all your savings to pay for it. The cabinet is very well designed but the bright silver finish of the cabinet makes it far too reflective and flashy. The depth of the set is quite less considering its screen size and makes it ideal if space is an important criterion.

The front side of the set has been given a clean look by keeping the front panel controls very simple. The set gives good quality picture even without calibration although the images are a bit reddish. The sets internal speakers offer excellent audio quality with 15 watts of output for every output channel. Overall the Zenith R56W36 is not the best HD monitor available today but strikes an excellent balance between size, performance and price.

The set offers plenty of input options to hookup your external devices to with some of them located in the front while most of them are at the side of the set. The remote is universal and can control up to four devices apart from the TV. The layout of the buttons is simple and all of them are illuminated which will prove to be a relief for most of the users.

The Samsung LN-T5265F is a 52 inch television set which uses the LCD technology. As far as Samsung is concerned they haven’t been the best in the best in the flat panel market although it would be fair to say that they have been not less than average. But there was plenty of apprehension as well as anticipation as to how the Samsung LN-T5265F would fare. Samsung have made plenty of progress in very little time and that became quite evident from this set.

Accurate colors often mean lower light output which often makes oversaturated colors look better. In the long run the accurate colors will prove to be more pleasing on the eye. The colors of the Samsung LN-T5265F are very accurate and the mistakes if any are minute enough so as not to be distinguished by the human eye. The contrast ratios were somewhere around 1150:1 which is quite high for an LCD although it does fall short of the best so far. The brightness of the set is more than satisfactory. The black levels offered by the Samsung LN-T5265F too were good for a flat panel display. The remote is universal with a glow in the dark button used to light up five other buttons. Well it is better than having absolutely no backlight!

Overall there was nothing that the Samsung LN-T5265F was poor at although it is not the best in most of the things either. All in all it is highly watchable flat panel television.

The Sony KF-50XBR800 is a 50 inch monitor using the LCD technology. Like most of the chip based RPTV’s of a similar size, the depth of the set is less than 16 inches. It tips the weighing scales at somewhere around 111 pounds which makes it quite heavy and will make you lose a few pounds when the installation takes place. The height of the set is near about 43 ½ inches which will make you go for a stand.

The full display resolution of the set is 1366 by 768 which is more than enough to display all the input sources at 720p. Other input sources with different display resolutions are scaled to fit the available pixel area. Even without any calibration the colors of the Sony KF-50XBR800 are quite accurate. The black levels are quite good although the grayscale makes the blacks look bluish. The LCD chips offer highly rich and vibrant colors which while watching HD content gives a very bright, sharp and detailed picture.

From the huge array of feature the DRC palette is one that caught my attention. It contains the reality and control settings which are used to define the amount of edge enhancement and reduce the noise respectively. This helps in smoothening of the images and gives sharper pictures. Performance-wise the Sony KF-50XBR800 combines the brightness of the DLP and the rich yet natural colors of the LCD to give the user a complete package.
