A single gaze at the JVC HD-58S998 and you see the most notable and perhaps the best feature of the set. The JVC HD-58S998 which has a screen size of 58 inches (measured diagonally) and yet is a meager 10.8 inches in depth. It is really hard to imagine that the manufacturers have managed to fit a lamp and various other projection accessories including a mirror inside the cabinet. Anyone does not need to be a scientist to know that a user will prefer a flat panel television to a RPTV even if it takes a few more inches in depth and a few more hundred bills which will eventually lead to the latter extinction. But the RPTV’s aren’t giving up that easily.

The dimensions of the set are 51.5 X 37.9 X 10.8 inches and weighs slightly more than 110 pounds. The less depth though does seem to have taken its toll as the performance of the set in terms of picture gives a real sore eye to the user. Don’t get me wrong but the set has a real hard time to maintain a picture with straight horizontal lines. As far as the other picture quality aspects and design is concerned, the set is surely among the best seen so far.

The native resolution offered by the set is 1920 X 1080 which is more than enough to show every detail at 1080i and 1080p. The signals from any other input sources are scaled to fit the available pixels. The brightness, contrast ratio and black levels of the set were very good although the grayscale was a bit lacking.

The JVC HD-56FN97 is a 56 inch rear projection television using JVC’s D-ILA technology. Out of JVC’s lineup of TV sets launched after 2006 offering 1080p using the D-ILA technology, considering the size this set is the cheapest in terms of price and give good performance even though it cannot be regarded as the best. The dimensions of the set are 50.9 X 37.2 X 17.7 inches in width, height and depth respectively and weighs in at 90.4.

The designing of the set was fairly simple yet was very elegant. A thin silver strip is used around the screen of the primarily black cabinet. A set of a couple of stereo speakers is attached to the cabinet at the bottom of the screen instead of the sides. This reduces valuable space in terms of width. The remote thankfully is backlit, which helps you find all the necessary buttons in the dark and makes me wonder why most companies still prefer to keep their remotes simple without backlighting.

The set offers a native resolution of 1920 X 1080, which is useful to show all the details at 1080p and 1080i. All the inputs from other sources are scaled to fit the available pixels. The use of the JVC’s D-ILA technology with its three chip technology helps the set to deliver excellent black levels and very high details. An onboard CableCard slot is another important addition and lets you view cable TV without having the hassles to buy additional set top boxes.

The Samsung LN-T4661F is a 46 inch high definition television using the LCD technology. The set is definitely the cheapest among all the flat panel LCD sets with full native resolution at 1080p. The style and design of the cabinet is good enough to beat most other LCD sets in the market. The screen has been given a coating of matte black to reduce the glare, if any, from ambient lights. The entire set is basically glossy black. The swivel stand, which is oval instead of rectangular, lets you rotate the screen upto 20 degrees on both sides.

The speakers are fitted into the cabinet in small cavities at the bottom of the screen and are almost hidden. The dimensions of the set are 43.6 X 23.8 X 4.1 inches in width, height and depth respectively. Including the stand the dimensions are increased to 43.6 X 30.2 X 12.8. The remote is well designed with buttons well differentiated and separated. It is trim and easy to operate with backlighting for the important buttons like volume, channel and device control. Even this was pleasing considering most other companies avoiding backlighting altogether.

The native resolution offered by the set is 1920 X 1080 which is also popularly called 1080p, is enough to show every detail of 1080i and 1080p HDTV. The Samsung LN-T4661F offers excellent picture quality with high detail levels and accurate colors. This set is an excellent option if you want to avoid any glare from your ambient lights or if you are struck with a bright room.

The Samsung LN-T3253H is a 32 inch high definition TV using the LCD technology. This set is a heir for the Samsung LN S3251D and has plenty of additions in terms of functions and offers plenty of incentives to spend a little more money. The cabinet has been made with a few more straight lines at the expense of the curves. The internal speakers are hidden (sorry fitted) inside the cavities in the cabinet at the bottom of the screen. This kind of placement of the speakers helps the manufacturers to reduce the width of the set by a few inches.

The manufacturers do not seem to be intent on making many changes to the color of the cabinet, which has been kept fully gloss black. The control keys are fitted to the side of the screen and not in the front and are touch sensitive. The full native resolution of the set is 1366 X 768 which is enough to display all the details of 720p high definition sources. All the other input sources including 1080i are scaled to fit the available pixels. The swivel stand allows the user to rotate the screen about 20 degrees to both sides.

Considering that the Samsung LN-T3253H is an LCD television its performance in the dark scenes was more than impressive. The set offers excellent picture detail although the grayscale does tend to dip towards blue especially in the darker scenes. With accurate color details the Samsung LN-T3253H is one of the best LCD in the size category.

With the launch of the Samsung LN-S4051D it was more than evident that the LCD’s are going to give the plasmas something more than just the price to fight about. Even though the best of the plasmas is still beating the best of the LCD’s but the latter is gaining ground rapidly. This has been proved by the LN-S4051D from the Samsung range which is a 40” television using the LCD technology.

As far as the looks are concerned the designers seem to have done plenty of work on this set and have added plenty of curves to the predominantly glossy black cabinet. The traditional V shape with the Samsung logo at the bottom of the screen has been maintained and has been given a slightly different bluish- black color. The dimensions of the set are 39 inches in width by 28 inches in height by 3.4 inches in depth without the stand and 39 inches in width by 28 inches in height by 12.8 inches in depth with the stand. The set weighs somewhere around 50 pounds.

The native display resolution of the Samsung LN-S4051D is 1366 X 768, which is enough to show all the details at 720p. All the other sources including HDTV, standard TV and DVD are scaled to fit the available pixels. The overall performance of the set was satisfactory as the colors were pretty accurate although the detail levels were found lacking especially in the darker scenes.

The Samsung LN-S3251D is a 32” television from the Samsung range of televisions using the LCD technology and is perhaps one of the most popular sets in its size category. As far as the looks are concerned the set is one of the most attractive. The designers must have worked hard on this one to add plenty of curves and styles to the primarily glossy black set.

The native resolution of the set is 1366 X 768, which is enough to show all the details at 720p. The internal speakers have been placed in small slits at the bottom of the screen instead of the sides. This allows the manufacturers to reduce the width of the set by a few inches on both sides and gives it a compact look. The dimensions of the set are 31.5 in width X 23.7 in height X 9.9 in depth and weighs in at 32.6 pounds. The swivel stand is better than it was in earlier versions and allows the user to rotate the screen for about 35 degrees.

The most noticeable feature which was missing was the adjustable backlighting which is used to improve the black level performance. The set offers fantastically deep, black levels which are comparable and perhaps better than the best set of the similar size. The deep black levels also help in giving very high contrast ratios with high detail levels. The color reproduction overall was good even though some of the scenes appeared too blue.

The Samsung HL-T5687S is a 56” high definition television using the DLP technology. This set is among the least expensive LED powered DLP rear projection television sets. Shaving off the borders of the screen and making the bezel as small as possible does seem to trend which is growing rapidly and Samsung does not seem to be too far behind with the distance from the screen to the edge of the cabinet measuring just a 3/4th of an inch. The cabinet of the set is glossy black except for the blue lighting, which can be turned off, and the silver Samsung logo.

Overall the Samsung HL-T5687S delivers excellent picture quality compared with its predecessors. The dimensions of the set are 50.4 X 34.9 X 14 inches (W X H X D) and tips the scales at 69 pounds. Even though the depth of the set cannot be compared to the depth of a few JVC sets, it is quite commendable when compared with Samsung’s previous models. Instead of a single light source, the set uses three LED’s one each for red, blue and green color production.

Cavities at the bottom of the cabinet are used to hide the built in speakers. The Samsung HL-T5687S offers a full display resolution of 1980 X 1080 at 1080p. the set offers excellent black levels with a very clean picture while maintaining a high contrast ratio and is definitely a good option if you want to avoid spending more on a plasma.

The Samsung HL-S5687W is 56” rear projection television using the DLP technology. Samsung is one of the leaders in manufacturing TV sets using DLP technology and were the frontrunners in introducing rear projection sets offering a full native resolution at 1080p. Now they seem to be resolute on making them more affordable and the Samsung HL-S5687W is one of them. Priced at somewhere around $2500 the set is perhaps the least expensive but the best performer than most other sets. It may not be the best solely in terms of performance but certainly is the best on the basis of value.

The color of the cabinet is basically fully glossy black. Samsung has quite successfully followed the trend and provided the set with a thin bezel width of 0.75 inches which makes the cabinet look more compact. The dimensions of the set are 50.9 X 35.6 X 16.3 (W X H X D) and weighs around 73 pounds which is quite praiseworthy for a 56” set. The set offers a full native resolution of 1920 X 1080 at 1080p. The DLP has 960 X 1080 pixels unlike the LCOS which has 1920 X 1080. For this the Samsung HL-S5687W uses a technology called wobulation which doubles the horizontal resolution. The advantages of 1080p though are limited for 720p or lower quality input sources.

The Samsung HL-S5687W offers fantastic performance giving commendable black levels and colors close to the D6500K after calibration.

The Samsung HL-R6768W is a rear projection TV using DLP technology. The set packs enough features and performance to give the other manufacturers a run for their money. It offers a full native resolution of 1920 X 1080 at 1080p. The outward appearance of the set though was quite conservative. The set has a table top design with the internal speakers being fitted in the cavities at the bottom of the screen. The positioning of the speakers has allowed the manufacturers to shave off a few inches from the width of the set. Apart from the silver strip at the bottom of the screen the rest of the cabinet is matte black.

The power button is located in the centre at the bottom of the screen. The rest of the function keys like the channel or volume buttons are fitted to the right side of the cabinet which gives the set a distinctive look. The overall dimensions of the set are 62 X 45 X 20 inches (W X H X D) and weighs 109 pounds which is extremely light for such a large TV. The DLP chip has 960 X 1080 numbers of pixels which is doubled using the wobulation or smooth picture technology.

The Samsung HL-R6768W is Cable ready with the provision of a CableCard slot which eliminates the need for external set top boxes. Overall the set gives a solid performance with accurate black levels, high contrast ratios and rich and natural colors.

The Sony KDL-46S3000 is a 46 inch TV set and uses the LCD technology. The set is a part of Sony’s Bravia series and the fact that it is the cheapest has given it a great chance to be the most popular among the masses. The dimensions of the set are 43.9 X 28.8 X 4.9 inches (W X H X D) and weighs in at a meager 61 pounds which makes it easier to be used for wall mounting purposes. The use of a stand though increases the dimensions by a bit.

The set delivers excellent picture quality with better black levels and higher processing quality. Although the Sony KDL-46S3000 was extremely good looking I am very much inclined to call it conservative. Except for a glossy black strip at the bottom of the screen the rest of the cabinet is matte black. The set offers a native resolution of 1366 X 768 which means that it can show all the details at 720p including high and standard definition and DVD’s which are scaled to fit the available pixels. The set offers an ideal brightness level and better black levels than the previous sets. The contrast levels offered by the set too were adequate although the screen appeared a bit red sometimes.

The Sony KDL-46S3000 is priced more than any other set of the same size but is less than most other 1080p models and should be a good prospect for most mid size television buyers.
