The LG RU-42PX11 is an enhanced definition television that uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches. As far as the performance is concerned, it does not perform badly although it is not the best in any of the categories either. However even this average, middle of the road performance has given the set a high rating. The cabinet is well designed and has been given an all silver look. The Panasonic TH-42PD25 is a high definition television, which uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. The black levels offered by the set were fantastic and one of the best for any plasma. As in most of the cases the excellent black levels have had a major contribution in rendering the high contrast ratios that the set offers. It would have been an added advantage if the set could have been a little brighter without affecting the black levels. After calibration, the picture looked even better with the accurate colors and a highly accurate gray scale especially while viewing high definition content.

As far as the performance of the set is concerned it is better than most of the plasmas in most of the categories. It does not show any quantization errors although it crushes the whites to a high extent. This means that whenever a bright image is shown on screen the most of the details. For example, the picture of a white cloud will not have any details and just appear as a white patch. Reducing the contrast just makes the image darker with increasing the detail levels. The set was not perfect in the transition from light to dark but was much better than most other plasma sets.

The Philips 42PF9630A is a high definition television that uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. The Pixel Plus 2 and Ambilight features too should attract plenty of attention to the set. The former does a fantastic job by smoothening out the images which makes any movement very fluid. The Ambilight feature has two LED’s, fixed at the back of the cabinet, which project lights on the background create an effect. The color of the lights may be chosen by the user or the set changes it to suit the image on screen.

The native display resolution offered by the set is 1024 by 768. The Philips 42PF9630A is very rich when it comes to the features. The features include the built in ATSC tuner and a CableCard which makes buying additional set top boxes quite unnecessary. The inclusion of two HDMI as well as two component video inputs should have plenty of users breathing a sigh of relief. Philips have gone with the trend or perhaps beyond it by providing 2 USB ports which allows you to listen to music or view slides directly from the USB device. The contrast ratios offered by this set are fantastic for an LCD which is mainly due to the deep black levels. The Sony PFM-42B1 is a high definition monitor, which has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. The screen sizes of the monitors that use the plasma technology just keeps on increasing is seen in the Sony PFM-42B1 also. However, this monitor does not give the highest display resolution when compared with the most other monitors that use the plasma technology. The native display resolution offered by this monitor is 1024 by 1024. The monitor is just 3 ¼ inches in depth that makes it super slim. It tips the weighing scales at 65.5 pounds, which makes it very light and easy for installation. The monitor offers 4:3 as well as 16:9 aspect ratios. The large viewing angles, which are upto 160 degrees, make the monitor viewable from almost anywhere in front of it.

The Sony PFM-42B1 offers excellent contrast ratios with high brightness. The monitor is capable of producing highly sharp images and rich, accurate colors. Using Sony’s I/P conversion technology, it produces clear images with very little noise. The antireflective coating reduces the light reflections, which makes usable in brightly lit rooms. The Sony KZ-42TS1 is a high definition television that has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology to deliver an excellent picture. The set is a complete package in terms of the features and functions and has plenty of differences than most of the run of the mill plasma sets. For starters, the Sony KZ-42TS1 has a native display resolution of 1024 by 1024. The cabinet is predominantly silver in color with the internal speakers fitted at the bottom of the screen. This positioning of the speakers has allowed the manufacturers to decrease the width of the set by quite a few inches. It is also equipped with a NTSC tuner and has a bezel width of 2 inches, which is not exactly synchronous with today’s trends of extremely thin bezels.

From the five preset modes offered by the set, the vivid mode offers excellent contrast and sharpness and is ideal for viewing during the day or in brightly lit rooms. The menu system of the set is extremely complex and has plenty of functions. To get to know all of these functions will take any user quite a bit of time. The Sony KZ-42TS1 however works much better displaying high definition or widescreen picture. The grayscale is much better after calibration and is something of a necessity.

The Sony KDL-46XBR4 is a high definition television, which uses the LCD technology and has a screen size of 46 inches when measured diagonally. The Bravia KDL-46XBR2 delivered excellent performance and was a real knockout set. With this backdrop, the specification sheets suggest that the Sony KDL-46XBR4 should be even better. For all you high definition TV things cannot get much better. The set is said to have a better black levels and a 120 Hz operation. The latter is a feature that helps to reduce the smear with moving images, which is one of the problems with the LCD technology.

The cabinet design is fantastic. The screen is surrounded with a dark gray bezel that is framed by a glass frame. Sony has gone a step further with the designing by providing bezels having different colors to match the décor of the room. Although this type of designing has its disadvantages as the set occupies more space than other sets of similar size. The set offers plenty of inputs although it lacks the CableCard slot. The controls are located at the side of the cabinet. However, you will rarely need to use them, as the remote is more than capable of doing everything.

The overall performance of the Sony KDL-46XBR4 is truly fantastic and even better than the Sony KDL-46XBR2. If you are willing to append a little more for it and have a slightly more unallocated space then you cannot go wrong with this set.

JVC D-ILA HD-56FH96 56 inch HDTV

The JVC HD-56FH96 is a high definition television, which has a screen size of 56 inches when measured diagonally and uses JVC’s highly acclaimed D-ILA technology. The cabinet of the set has a very thin bezel and is fully black in color.

The JVC HD-56FH96 has a full display resolution of 1920 by 1080, which is also known as 1080p and is the highest native display resolution available today. Surprisingly though even if it can display 1080p, it does not accept the input signals at 1080p, which is a real disappointment. In this case, the input signals are upconverted to 1080p to be displayed with the full display resolution.

The colors produced by the set were outstanding in all the tests that were conducted. Although it was brilliant during a few of the tests, overall the set lacked consistency. Te picture was quite sharp but it was also very dark especially in the shadows and offered minimal details. The vertical viewing angles were also very narrow compared to most other sets. The remote is fully functional and has plenty of buttons to help the viewer get the best possible output. Thank fully all the buttons are backlit which makes the remote easy to use in the dark.

The set is priced at more than $3000. The fact that the set does not accept 1080p is too much of a void for it to fill and really does not offer much value for money.

The LG 42LP1D is a high definition television that uses the LCD technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. The prices of the LCD’s like the sets from most of the other technologies are dropping very quickly. Even though the LCD had a massive lead in the market over the plasmas the latter is catching up very quickly. The brightness of the set is fantastic and is perhaps one of the brightest LCD’s seen so far. This means that the set will be a pleasure to watch even in brightly lit rooms as it does a great job at minimizing any reflections.

The set is quite good with the black levels too and produces higher than average levels for an LCD. The vertical viewing angle is quite average for an LCD although the horizontal one should have been better. The cabinet houses the internal speakers at the sides of the screen. The set is primarily silver in color with a thin black colored frame around the screen. More than anything else, the best things about the set are the brightness and the high black levels. So if you like watching the television during the day or have a brightly lit room, the LG 42LP1D is the one to go for.

The LG 42PX4D is a high definition television which uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. The cabinet is well designed and has plenty of style and elegance. It is predominantly silver in color and a shiny black frame is used to house the screen. The inbuilt speakers like in most cases have been placed at the sides of the screen. The set offers plenty of input options to hookup the external devices. Although the set is not exactly cheap, it is not far off the average price either.

The best thing about the LG 42PX4D is the black level which is as low as 0.027 ft-L which is very high for a plasma. The set offers one of the highest black levels for a plasma television till date even though it falls well short of what the CRT’s are capable of generating. The performance of the set would have been one to watch out for except for the colors. Even though the colors are not bad, they certainly are not accurate. Even though the plasma technology has been credited with image burn-in issues plenty of times now, enough has been done to control the situation. You are unlikely to suffer the impact unless you increase the contrast to a really high level.
