JVC LT-32X787 32” LCD HDTV

The JVC LT-32X787 is a 32” (measured diagonally) high definition television using the LCD technology. The size of the set is one of the most popular sizes among all classes and this may well be due to the fact that most people want to replace their CRT TV’s which are around 27”. The set is priced at around $1200 which makes it sit at the midlevel for its range of sizes. JVC has done well to break the pattern of making the cabinets all black. The silver and black cabinet has been modestly styled. The cabinet is predominantly silver with the black part used around the screen.

The dimensions of the set are 31.5 inches in width, 23.3 inches in height and 10.6 inches in depth and it tips the scales at 38.3 pounds including the stand. The huge JVC remote (almost a trademark) will not really earn too many accolades and packs too many buttons with similar functions in a haphazard manner. The extra (second) HDMI interface is certainly a huge asset which most people will be willing to pay more for.

The maximum display resolution offered by the JVC LT-32X787 is 1366 X 768 which is more than enough to show all the details at 720p. All the other input sources are scaled to fit the available pixels. It can be easily noticed the set showed the 720p resolution sources better and sharper than the sets having 1080i resolution. The overall performance of the JVC LT-32X787 was superb as it offered accurate colors for an LCD although the blacks were a little light.

Hitachi 65F59 65-Inch CRT Projection HDTV

Even with new technologies like the plasma, the LCD and the DLP taking the markets by storm and occupying most of the market share some of the manufacturers are still offering large screen CRT projection sets with better performance at much more sensible prices. Although the size of the cabinet does have most people shying away from them some of the sets really have much superior performance to the sets using other technologies. Style and elegance may be one of the factors at which the CRT may be caught lacking.

The dimensions of the set are 61 inches in width, almost 60 inches in height and 25 3/8 inches in depth. The depth, even though quite high, is not much larger than some of the rear projection televisions of the same size. The depth though will be beaten silly if you dare compare it to the LCD’s. With this in mind I will make it a point to keep the comparisons restricted to the CRT’s. The weight of the set is just a bit less than 260 which is quite reasonable for a CRT television having a screen size of 65 inches. The Hitachi 65F59 has an integrated ATSC tuner which enables it to process all incoming signals upto 1080i.

Overall the set offers excellent performance providing excellent black levels and accurate colors which are the specialties of the CRT without the problems faced by the use of the newer technologies. The pricing of the CRT sets makes it a good value for money.

Hitachi 55VS69 55-Inch LCD Projection HDTV

The Hitachi 55VS69 is a high definition television using the LCD technology and has a screen size of 55 inches when measured diagonally. With the use of the LCD technology Hitachi has managed to keep the set very compact and lightweight inspite of its huge size. The dimensions of the set are 50 ¾ inches in width, 34 ¼ inches in height and 18 inches in depth. The weight of the set is a measly 86 pounds which is quite commendable considering the size.

The Hitachi 55VS69 has been well designed not just in terms of the compactness but also with respect to the design and styling. The front of the cabinet has been kept clean and tidy with the channel and volume buttons located at the side with other inputs and outputs on the backside. The placement of the speakers inside the cabinet at the bottom of the screen has allowed the manufacturers reduce the width of the set by a precious few inches.

The set is cable TV ready with the inclusion of a CableCard slot which eliminates the need and the hassles to go for separate set top boxes. The native resolution of the set is 1280 X 720 which is sufficient for any input sources at 720p. As far as the performance is concerned the Hitachi 55VS69 is quite good (even though not the best) and is certainly worth a look if you are looking for a large screen size without wasting too much space.

Hitachi 62VS69 62-Inch LCD Projection HDTV:

The Hitachi 62VS69 is a high definition television using the LCD technology and has a 62 inch screen size when measured diagonally. LCD HDTV’s till now have not exactly been given the attention that is normally bestowed upon the other versions like the DLP or flat panel sets. But this set proves that the LCD technology will not be knocked out of the race so easily, as it makes quite an effort with some good performance and a decent list of features. The screen size is really huge and is an excellent option if you are looking for a big screen size for a relatively small size.

The Hitachi 62VS69 offers a native resolution of 1280 X 720 in which all the incoming signals are displayed at 720p. Hitachi has used a three panel LCD system in which each panel is used for red, green, and blue colors. One of the drawbacks of the use of LCD technology is the screen door effect. In screen door effect you can easily see the space between the pixels especially during bright scenes. The speakers have been intelligently placed inside the cabinet at the bottom of the screen which reduces the width of the set on both sides of the screen by quite a few inches.

The dimensions of the set are 57 inches in width, 35 inches in height and 19 ½ inches in depth. The set weighs in at just above 100 pounds. The set offers a good performance giving good colors although there is room for improvement as far as the black levels are concerned.

The JVC HD-70FN97 is a 70 inch high definition television using the JVC highly acclaimed D-ILA technology. Believe you me if you are have started feeling that your 50 or 60 inch television set is too small then this set is what you are looking for. The huge size of the set makes any other set look tiny. It uses the D-ILA technology which is a variant of the LCOS technology and is more like a combination of the DLP and the LCD.

The set uses a three chip D-ILA system where each chip is used for the blue, red and green color production respectively. The native display resolution offered by the set is a full 1920 X 1080 which is also known as 1080p in which all incoming signals are scaled to fit the available pixels. The dimensions of the set are 64 inches in width, 46 inches in height and 20 ½ inches in depth. The weigh of the set is around 159 pounds. The placement of the speakers inside the cabinet at the bottom of the screen instead of at the sides has allowed the manufacturers to shave off quite a few inches of the width of the set.

As far as the performance of the JVC HD-70FN97 is concerned it is quite good even though it cannot be referred to as the best. The set offers excellent black levels which is one of the areas where projection televisions have been caught lacking. Although the better color accuracy was what I hoped for the set covers up its tracks by providing excellent high quality detailed and sharp images.

Samsung LN-S4096D 40” LCD HDTV

The Samsung LN-S4096D is 40” high definition television using LCD technology. The set offers a native resolution of 1920 X 1080 also known as 1080p which is the highest resolution available today. In terms of price, features and specifications the set is sure to be among the frontrunners. The performance too in most cases is commendable. The dimensions of the set are 39.1 X 27.4 X 3.6 inches in width, height and depth respectively which is incredible. Including the stand the dimensions are increased to 39.1 X 27.4 X 12.8 inches in width, height and depth respectively.

The set tips the scale at a measly 24.5 pounds which is certainly worth a few accolades considering the size of the set. The internal speakers are fitted in downward slits under the bottom of the screen which allows the manufacturers to reduce the width of the set by a few inches on both sides. The swivel stand is simply fantastic and lets you rotate the set about 20 degrees on both sides. The remote of the set though fails to incorporate the classiness of the set and should have been better.

The native resolution of the Samsung LN-S4096D is absolutely fantastic and is sufficient to show all the details at 1080p. All other sources are scaled to fit the native display resolution. After proper adjustments were made the performance of the black levels was magnificent and could be at least comparable to some of the plasmas in the market. Although the grayscale was a bit inconsistent the overall performance of the set was quite good but not the best.

JVC LT-40FN97 40 inch Rear Projection LCD TV

The JVC LT-40FN97 has a 40 inch screen size and uses the LCD technology. JVC really has never been at the top spot as far as LCD HDTV’s are concerned but the D-ILA giants have made giant strides and make up some of the lost ground over its rivals with the JVC LT-40FN97. This set packs in plenty of features to give a better viewing experience and looks good as far as the specification sheets are concerned, for the actual performance read on.

The cabinet of the set is primarily glossy black with a matte black strip at the bottom of the screen used to house the internal speaker. The positioning of the speakers at the bottom of the screen instead of the sides helps reduce its dimensions in terms of the width. The dimensions of the set including the stand are 39.4 inches in width, 29 inches in height, and 12.8 inches in depth and 68.2 pounds in weight. The native resolution offered by the JVC LT-40FN97 is 1920 X 1080 which is enough to show all the details at 1080i and 1080p. All the other input sources are scaled to fit the available pixels.

The colors were accurate except that the picture appeared a little bluish especially in the dark scenes. The black levels too were sufficient but could have been much better. The picture quality of the JVC LT-40FN97 does fall short of the higher end LCD TV’s but there is nothing to suggest that you should stay away from it.

Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 40 inch LCD TV:

The Sony KDL-V40XBR1 has a 40 inch screen (measured diagonally) and uses the LCD technology. The set is from Sony’s Bravia series which was earlier called WEGA. In comparison to other sets of similar size using LCD technology it delivers amazing picture quality. It is not yet comparable to similar sized plasmas but is certainly costlier than them. The black cabinet with the silver lining around the black borders around the screen has become the standard dressing style for Sony. The power, volume and channel buttons are placed on the right side of the panel which gives the set a very different look.

The dimensions of the set are 40 X 25 X 5 inches (W X H X D) and it tips the scales at 75 pounds which makes wall mounting a feasible and attractive option. The native display resolution offered by the set is 1366 X 768 which is good enough to show every detail at 720p including all input signals which are scaled to fit the available pixels. The color temperature presets are fantastic and are quite accurately near the D6500K standard. Most of the other “picture enhancing” features actually reduce the picture quality and should be turned off.

The black enhancer reduces the brightness and is not required if the brightness control is set properly. The contrast enhancer too reduces the detail levels and can be turned off. With these settings the set offered commendable picture quality alongwith commendable black levels for an LCD.

Samsung LN-T4665F 46 inch LCD TV:

The Samsung LN-T4665F is a 46 inch high definition television using the LCD technology. As far as performance is concerned the set offers the best performance for any set using the LCD technology and is very much comparable to the top plasmas in the market. The glossiness does seem to rub off on the screen too which makes for a big disadvantage. The manufacturers have decided to keep it simple again with the whole cabinet made glossy black. The curved corners and sleek design though are quite a turn on with thin cavities at the bottom of the screen used to house the speakers. The placement of the speakers has allowed the manufacturers to shave off a few inches in the width of the set.

The dimensions of the set are 43.6 inches in width, 23.8 inches in height and 4.1 inches in depth which are quite commendable. Including the stand however the dimensions increase to about 43.6 inches in width, 30.2 inches in height and 12.8 inches in depth. The full display resolution offered by the Samsung LN-T4665F is 1920 X 1080 also known as 1080p which is more than sufficient to show all the details at 1080p and 1080i HDTV input sources.

In terms of performance the picture quality offered by the Samsung LN-T4665F is truly magnificent. The set offers excellent picture detail with highly accurate and saturated colors. This set is a sure buy if you like watching television with the lights off.

JVC HD-58S998 58 inch Rear Projection HDTV:

A single gaze at the JVC HD-58S998 and you see the most notable and perhaps the best feature of the set. The JVC HD-58S998 which has a screen size of 58 inches (measured diagonally) and yet is a meager 10.8 inches in depth. It is really hard to imagine that the manufacturers have managed to fit a lamp and various other projection accessories including a mirror inside the cabinet. Anyone does not need to be a scientist to know that a user will prefer a flat panel television to a RPTV even if it takes a few more inches in depth and a few more hundred bills which will eventually lead to the latter extinction. But the RPTV’s aren’t giving up that easily.

The dimensions of the set are 51.5 X 37.9 X 10.8 inches and weighs slightly more than 110 pounds. The less depth though does seem to have taken its toll as the performance of the set in terms of picture gives a real sore eye to the user. Don’t get me wrong but the set has a real hard time to maintain a picture with straight horizontal lines. As far as the other picture quality aspects and design is concerned, the set is surely among the best seen so far.

The native resolution offered by the set is 1920 X 1080 which is more than enough to show every detail at 1080i and 1080p. The signals from any other input sources are scaled to fit the available pixels. The brightness, contrast ratio and black levels of the set were very good although the grayscale was a bit lacking.
