Samsung 55" dlp shutsoff

Postby Todd » Sun Jul 17, 2011 7:40 pm

Im having a problem with my 4 year old samsung 55" dlp shutting off. The picture is fine and it makes no strange noises. It will turn back on after a few seconds to a minute. When it wont turn back on the standby and lamp light blink.
I took off the lamp panel and the fan is turning. When the tv shuts off the lamp turns off first and then the fan stops. The color wheel is turning.

Thanks for any advice!!

I have never replaced the lamp. After taking the back panel off where the lamp is and putting it back on the tv has not shut off. I do have a new lamp ready if needed.
Any thoughts as to why it is working now and the only thing I did was remove and replace the back panel?

Thanks!

If you have not replaced the lamp yet and the lamp door cover has reset the lamp timer, this may have reset the ballast into thinking it has a new lamp, however if the TV does not fail in the next couple of days then I will be severely confused! I think it need a new lamp

Well the tv finally shut off again today. I will replace the lamp, and hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks for your input. If the new lamp doesnt fix the problem, I will let you know.

Thanks again!

Did it work? I'm following this discussion because mine is doing the exact same thing. My husband is very mechanical so I was hoping he could fix our TV and not have to take it to a repair shop. He is worried that it's not as straight forward as I'm making it sound.

Has it turned off again? My TV is doing the same thing but it has a standby/temp light that comes on, did your TV have that too?

So far so good. I replaced the lamp three days ago and have had no problems. If you order the lamp online, be careful. I bought mine on Amazon for about $110, but I saw them advertised on other web sites for up to $250..
The replacement is very simple. Also i would suggest when you take the lamp cover off, look at the fan and see if you have dust building up on it.
I had the lamp and standby lights flash once, but I later realized they flashed because I had the lamp cover off..

Hello!
You are correct, for safety reasons the lamp door cover has a sensor and if it not properly replaced it will not turn the lamp on. The ignition charge is of 15kV so its for our own good this happens
keep us posted!

Grayfox, you really need to watch your comments if you are not positive they are correct.
Opening the lamp cover will not reset any counters or timers.
There is no resetting of the balast and the balast has no way of knowing the status of the lamp.
There is a circuit that tells the balast how hard to drive the lamp but the balast is not where the lamp information is sampled nor does the balast make any choices on driving the lamp, the balast just does what it is told.
Putting up incorrect statements can really lead someone down the wrong path and I don't know anyone who enjoys that.

gcdi you are correct, my statement "the ballast thinks" is not correct and might be misleading, I thought it was best to describe it that way... however I was led to think by my technician colleagues that the removal and replacement of the lamp door cover can trigger some sort of reaction by the TV's lamp timer that would allow it to continue functioning. Thank you for your information, I was not aware that ALL DLP's have no affect if the lamp door is removed and replaced.

If your tv turns on, gets a picture and then turns off after a minute , less or more then I may have your answer. On top of the metal housing which your plastic bulb assembly slides into is a temp sensor. It has a blue and white wire that plugs into it. You can easily see the wire and plug above the metal housing. This sensor seems to go bad and tell the tv to turn off. It is meant to be a fire hazard yet why would a tv that has worked for 4 years suddenly become too hot? Pull the plug out and jump the plug with a wire so the blue and white are now connected. You have bypassed the faulty sensor and your tv should now turn on. The sensor can be replaced cheaply..just have to pull assembly out to get to it. seems simple huh? this would explain people using fans to cool off back of tv..really cooling off sensor.

As far as the lamp door safety switch, i just cut the wires and connected them. no more worries about a cheap switch. Its there to keep you from staring at the bulb..I wont be doing that.

Might I advise you replace the part once you get a chance!? the sensor is there for a reason and you never know when if at all it will be needed! ;)

The picture going out after a few minutes can be caused by a lamp, sometimes the picture will come back on without you doing anything.
Most people don't think a lamp can be intermittent but I have seen it many times. These lamps are not like an incadescent lamp which once they fail the filiment goes open so the lamp can not light again.

I agree, I have seen some flicker without completely going out. Some techs blame the ballast...
