A friend gave me this tv. We can only watch it in the dark in order to see the picture. It has colors but like I said, you can only see in a dark room. Does this mean I need a new lamp? I check the tv from the back and I don't see any light on in it. Thank you.

yes it needs a new lamp. It fades over time and a new one will brighten the picture up very nicely. Google it and a walkthrough will be revealed. I just replaced the lamp in my TV which is the same model as yours and it took 5 minutes. If you pop the lower front cover off (just pull it off) and reveal the access panels. The lamp replacement panel is left of center and can be opened by unscrewing one plastic phillips head screw which reveals the lamp/lamp housing which is secured with one metal phillips head screw. Once that is reviewed just pull on the handle (as long as you have given it ample time to cool down). Reverse the procedure and you have replaced your lamp. They run around $100 online if you shop for it. Good Luck.
