Benq PB8220 bulb replacement? Need help

Postby matteapolis » Sat May 16, 2015 5:27 pm

Hi, this is my first projector. Bought used for cheap from Goodwill.

Currently when I turn on the projector, the fans fire up and it seems all is fine. There is a quick flash from the bulb, then it goes out and the "Lamp" LED comes on.

I assume this means the bulb needs to be replaced.

I went to ebay and ordered a cheap aftermarket bulb(just the bulb, used the old cradle), and when installed, it does nothing, no flicker, nothing. The "Lamp" LED comes on right away.

Am I safe to assume that the cheap (well $50, not too cheap) bulb I bought is to blame, or do I have to reset something to get it to fire up?

I read about resetting the timer on the bulb so you would know when to replace the new one, but it seems like the bulb would fire up so I can see the settings to reset?

Anyway, I'm an amateur here and need some help. Is this projector toast or is there a relatively easy fix?

Please help.

Thanks!

Hello!

Thank you for the images, I am with you on this one, the original lamp you see there with the reflective UV coating is the OEM Philips lamp (you can get this online from any authorized distributor, ebay or amazon, just make sure it says Philips and its original)

The one you purchased is not eve close to something I would give to a client! Do not worry there are TONS of bootleg and generic lamp sellers everywhere even on Amazon and eBay.

(depending on the storage conditions if the lamp does not do the trick this might be a ballast issue, since this projector is recovered its hard to say how much use it has gotten..

But definitely try the lamp first, its easy and relatively cheap for this BENQ which performs great I have one myself.

Hope this helps!

So, I've tried a couple of other bulbs at this point and now I believe it's an issue with the ballast.

Next question, how do I repair/replace the ballast? I'm up for the task, just need some guides.

Thanks and apologies for taking so long to get back to this. I'm not ready to give up!

Hello,

wow ok if more than one lamp doesn't work then you most likely have a ballast issue, now I always refer to this youtube video just to follow the steps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wwzRWSQqIU

since it is not the same model things might look different but the steps are the same I want to guess for most projectors..

I hope this helps, all I can provide is that once you remove the original DO NOT ORDER the replacement ballast with just the model number for you might not find it online, use instead the part number off the ballast from your projector, (the price should run from 69.99 to 89.99) there might be other models that use the same ballast and it broadens your search! Also make sure you buy from someone with a good return policy in case this is not the problem (hint) and you need to return it for a refund..

Hope this helps!

Welp, replaced the ballast and it did not fix the projector. :(

Do I give up at this point or what? I'm already over a hundred in on replacement parts that I have to return. Is it worth buying the more expensive lamp to see if that works?

When I power it up, fans come on and the lamp led automatically comes on and the source led (in green) lights up and the power button is flashing green. Is there a chance something needs to be reset?

Thanks. I'll start looking on craigslist for another projector now. Frustrated...

Hi there,

Well getting one bad generic lamp is very common but you say you have tried many.. I guess it wouldn't hurt at this point to "test and original lamp" and if not return it...

It seems the power supply and all the boards are working are you sure the ballast is the correct one? I would take it all apart one more time and replug everything in carefully making sure all the cables and ribbons are properly connected..

I always begin my trouble shooting with an original Philips brand lamp. And go from there, for this very reason I have a couple of bare lamp models lying around.

Good Luck!
