Counterfeit projector lamps may seem like quite the bargain. Would you compromise your health and risk your eyesight for the sake of a few dollars?

Using counterfeit, knock-off projector or rear-projector TV (RPTV) lamps puts you at risk for potential damage to your eyesight as well as exposure to , a radioactive gas that is linked to cancer.

Toxic bargain

What is Krypton-85 doing in counterfeit projector and RPTV lamps? Using this toxic element is the only way for copy-cat manufacturers to re-produce the technology created by PHILIPS, the original manufacturer of DLP projector and RPTV lamps.

After years of research, PHILIPS developed a revolutionary arc tube filled with mercury-argon mixture that created intense light but lowered the heat allowing both the lamp and projector to become smaller.

Since PHILIPS patented technology is not available to counterfeit manufacturers, they resort to using Krypton-85 for the same result. This radioactive gas is created from by nuclear reactors during the fission between uranium and plutonium and has a number of industrial and medical applications. It’s safe when used in a controlled environment.

Lack of durability

Unfortunately, Krypton-85 is not being used under safe conditions when it comes to counterfeit lamps, often referred to as “compatible lamps.” In order to create the knock-off lamp, counterfeit manufacturers usually replace the arc tube or refit old projector lamps with counterfeit parts; others replace the complete module. Whichever method they choose, they are still producing a lamp with a shorter life cycle and inferior technology.

Lack of accountability

Exposure to Krypton-85 happens when these lamps break or explode inside the projector from overheating. Short-term effects of Krypton-85 exposure are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. Long-term effects are more serious. According to the Department of Energy (DOE) exposure to Krypton-85 can increase the likelihood of cancer.

Protect your eyesight

PHILIPS lamps also use a UV coated reflectors allowing for a brighter and more vibrant picture. Counterfeit lamps have a non-coated reflector, which eventually damages color wheel and optical block in your projector—both expensive components to repair.

More importantly, PHILIPS UV reflectors are designed to reduce harmful rays from the intense light thereby protecting your eyesight. Counterfeit lamps without UV coated reflectors can produce an effect similar to looking at the sun without UV protection.

Buyer beware

Inferior knock-off lamps are flooding the market. You’ll find generic lamps being sold at Amazon.com, Buy.com, Sears.com and eBay.com—in fact it can be hard to distinguish the real lamps from the counterfeits.

Follow our easy 3-step guide to a new Sanyo PLC-SL20 projector lamp.

STEP TWO: Install the Sanyo POA-LMP65 lamp

• NOTE: Allow the Sanyo PLC-SL20 projector to thoroughly cool before changing the lamp. Turn off the projector, unplug the AC cord and allow 45 to 60 minutes for the projector to cool. These projectors operate under high heat and there is a possibility of being burned, if the projector is not fully cooled before changing the lamp.
• The lamp cover for the Sanyo PLC-SL20 is at the bottom of the projector. Gently turn projector over and loosen the screw holding the cover in place. Place the cover to one side.
• Inside you’ll find the Sanyo POA-LMP65 (service parts no 610 307 7925) lamp cage. Loosen all three screws holding the lamp cage in place.
• Grab the lamp handle and gently lift the lamp out of its socket. Place to one side. Be sure to dispose of the used lamp through a local recycling program. Don’t throw this lamp into regular garbage as it contains mercury.
• Taking the new Sanyo POA-LMP65 lamp assembly by the handle place it into the slot. Avoid touching the actual bulb as the oil from your fingers can burn a black spot on the lenses or you can accidentally break the bulb. Don’t force the lamp into place — it should slide into the slot easily.
• Once the lamp is in, tighten all three screws on the Sanyo POA-LMP65 (6103077925) lamp assembly. Make sure the screws have been tightened properly or the Sanyo PLC-SL20 projector will not turn on.
• Replace the Lamp Cover and tighten the screw. Re-connect the power cord and turn on the PLC-SL20 projector. If the Sanyo POA-LMP65 (service parts no 610 307 7925) lamp does not turn on after the warm-up period, try re-installing the lamp.
• Reset the Lamp Replacement Counter following the instructions below.

NOTE: Your old  Sanyo POA-LMP65 (service parts no 610 307 7925) lamp should be properly recycled. These lamps contain mercury and can’t be placed into common garbage.

STEP THREE: Reset the Sanyo PLC-SL20 Lamp Replace Counter

The Lamp Replace Counter for the  Sanyo PLC-SL20 will track the correct age of your newly installed lamp and trigger the Lamp Replacement Indicator. Failure to reset the counter may result in the projector not tracking the end of life for the Sanyo POA-LMP65 (service parts no 610 307 7925) and letting the projector inadvertently use the lamp past its normal life cycle. Your  Sanyo PLC-SL20 may stop working suddenly if the Lamp Replace Counter has not been properly set.

• Press the MENU Button to display the MAIN MENU. Press the POINT LEFT/RIGHT button and scroll right to select SETTING.
• Press the SELECT button to display the SETTING DISPLAY menu.
• Press the POINT DOWN button (a red arrow will appear).
• Move the red arrow to the LAMP AGE and then press the SELECT button.
• The message “Lamp replace counter reset?”  appears. Move the arrow down to YES and press the SELECT button.
• Move the arrow to QUIT and press the SELECT button.

3 tips for extending the life of the Sanyo POA-LMP65 projector lamp

Extend the life of your newly installed Sanyo POA-LMP65 (610 307 7925) by following these helpful tips:

• Wait at least five minutes before turning the PLC-SL20 projector off.
• Don’t operate the projector continuously without letting it stand for at least one hour turned off every 24 hours.

This adapter will allow you to fit a new model Samsung Lamp (made by Philips) into your older generation TV. Lamp Codes such as the BP96-00224C/D/E/F/J which all utilize the older “big” bulb can be converted to this more modern and reliable lamp.

How do I know if my TV is compatible with the Philips Lamp Adapter?

1. Is your TV equipped with a Philips Lamp? If Yes, continue to question #2
2. Does your TV Lamp look like the lamp below? You will probably have to open your lamp enclosure to double check.

So far so good? If so, you should keep a spare of these lamps in stock… as you may know, Samsung was recently on backorder 4-6 weeks for these lamps!! Samsung has a lot of DLP customers confused… here is a little background:

Samsung originally used Toshiba as their UHP Lamp supplier. Samsung went through a few production runs and then made the decision to switch to Philips UHP Lamps. Why they made the switch is speculation…Higher quality? Better reputation? Better pricing? Who knows! One thing that is clear: Philips is the innovator of UHP lamps. They are also leaders in R&D in this growing technology. Samsung did it’s homework and went with the leader in the industry (good job Samsung)!

So Samsung originally came out with BP96-00224A which was a Toshiba Lamp. This was later replaced with the BP96-00224C which was a Philips Lamp. Here is a picture below showing the only physically apparent difference between the lamp enclosures.

Don’t pay too much attention to the shape of the enclosure as there are a few variations of each. More importantly are the connectors and their shapes and colors. The Toshiba connectors are more of a rectangular design and they are BROWN while the Philips lamps have a more rounded connector and are BLACK. Physically the lamps are essentially the same size but they are not interchangeable. I will post another entry showing the differences in the lamps themselves. Here are two pictures of the Samsung lamp:

If you replace a Toshiba lamp with a Philips you will need to change the ballast as well…otherwise you could burn the ballast, lamp, or both!

So which lamp is compatible with which TV?
Wait a minute… there is also a NEWER Design lamp out there!

The newer designed lamp is made by Philips and it is compatible as a replacement for ALL Samsung TVs that use the Philips Lamps. If you have a “Big” Philips lamp (like the one pictured above), you will need the Philips Lamp Adapter to use the newest “Small” Philips lamps, click here for more information about the adapter. Anyway, here is a picture of the latest model Lamp only:

But this is a much smaller lamp than the one in my TV…are you sure it is compatible?

As UHP Lamp technology evolves, these lamps are going to get smaller and more luminous. These newer lamps are 100W/120W lamps and use the same energy as the older lamps, yet their compact and modern design is another benefit to the extended life Philips claims.

I’m still confused, do you have a simple way for me to distinguish which type of lamp I have and what my replacement options are?

The simple answer is YES, but a YES with an exception. Samsung screwed up big time with the production of their DLPs. I don’t know of any other manufacturer who has gone through so many lamp changes!

First Step: Locate the lamp code on the right side of your TV (right side of the TV as if you are watching TV). Typically there is a RED and WHITE sticker that looks like this:

The “(P)” in the lamp code stands for Philips. If your lamp code has a “(T)” that means the lamp manufacturer is Toshiba… which also means you have one of the first generation TVs Samsung manufactured! This is a bad thing considering you will need to change your ballast if you want to use the more readily available Philips “Big” lamps or the newer Philips “Small” Lamps.

To CLARIFY again,
Step 1: figure out who manufactured your lamp: Philips or Toshiba.
Step 2: If you have a Philips (P) Lamp, and the lamp code the starts with BP96-00224, then that means you should have a “Big” Philips lamp inside your TV, one of these:

If you have a Philips (P) and the Lamp Code starts with BP96-006, BP96-008, BP96-01, that usually means you have a “Small” Philips lamp, like this:

But we’ve seen cases where this is not true! The safest and recommended way to go about it is to physically remove the lamp enclosure to inspect the lamp. There should also be another Lamp Code sticker on the side of the enclosure… often times this lamp code is different from the lamp code on the outside of the TVs (go figure…)! To avoid problems, take 5 minutes and check the lamp type!

If you have a “Big” Philips lamp,  purchase the original, OEM, Philips lamp available from Discount-Merchant.com.

If you have a “Small” Philips lamp, your best bet is to purchase an original replacement lamp. OEM lamps are available here. Don’t throw that TV away or go with an expensive TV repairman. Often times it’s cheaper to first change the lamp than to call a service technician for $150+. Always buy an OEM part.

We also recommend replacing the entire enclosure if it looks damaged or warped as this may cause your lamp to be misaligned inside the television!

To replace just your lamp, all you need is:

• An RCA DLP lamp made by Philips
• A flat-head screwdriver
• A T-10 & T-15 Torx driver
• A pair of plyiers
• A pair of gloves or a lint-free cloth (to wipe the glass down afterwards)

Step 1: Locate the lamp.

Here is the back of a typical RCA DLP TV… your TV may look slightly different.

The lamp is behind this rectangle door!

You’re going to need your flat-head screwdriver to loosen this screw:

Loosen the screw and then use the two “clips” to open the compartment door.

What we’re looking at it is the lamp enclosure. There is one screw on each side that need to be loosened.

Now you can gently pull back the tray and viola, you have removed your lamp!

Step2: Remove the lamp from the enclosure

This is a picture of the enclosure with your old lamp facing downward. Visually inspect the area labeled
“Clip.” They are on the top and bottom of the enclosure. Between them, there is about a 3″ gap where
you need to push in with your thumb to be able to pull out the rear lamp cover.

The following picture looks at the other side of the lamp enclosure. As you are pushing in on the lamp enclosure,
you want to release these:

Here is a fuzzy picture with that part of the enclosure disassembled and now it is held together by the wiring

Now we have access to unscrew the lamp connectors with your plyer and torx driver. Once the back of the
enclosure is removed…

Now you have access to remove the three screws circled above…Here is a recap of your parts so far…

I’ve swapped out my old Lamp / Bulb with a new, original replacement lamp above…remember the washer!

When assembling the rear enclosure back on, remember to double check and make sure everything is in place.
The bottom has not been installed correctly in this picture.

It took me about 5 minutes from enclosure removal to enclosure re-install… it might take an inexperienced user 10-15 mins…

IMPORTANT: The bulb should be handled with a clean cloth to avoid any dirt or oil. Our hands are naturally oily… this is a no-no for these lamps. It doesn’t hurt to do a final wipe with a clean, non-abrasive, lint free cloth before reinstalling your lamp. Alternatively, you can wear a pair of latex gloves!
